HARRISBURG - Among the first promises made by Majority Leader Todd Eachus when he landed the top job among House Democrats was to review all contracts, to stamp out unnecessary and wasteful spending.

Eachus suspends committee chairs writing checks from appropriations

In another internal tweak meant to bring reform to the caucus, House Majority Leader Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne County) said Wednesday committee chairs will no longer be able to write checks directly from their appropriations.

Eachus said in a statement the move to a centralized system will provide more accountability and transparency.

Eachus says recent moves show change has come to HDC

HARRISBURG -- Newly elected House Majority Leader Todd Eachus said Wednesday that this week's decision to forgo a scheduled pay increase and hire outside counsel to review caucus operations are the first signals he will change the HDC.

His ascension to the leadership position is the first change atop the caucus in more than a decade, Eachus told reporters during a question-and-answer session in his Capitol office.

"If there is a time for change, it's now," he said.

HDC leadership foregoing raise, letting rank-and-file make own decision

Leaders of the House Democratic Caucus said late Tuesday night they will personally forgo the legislature's recent pay increase but will not suspend the automatic cost-of-living adjustment for rank-and-file members.

On Monday, the legislature received a scheduled 2.8 percent pay increase. The raise infuriated reform activists, who compared it to 2005's infamous pay grab that led to 50 lawmakers either retiring or being voted out of office.

Eachus hires attorney to review HDC, look for inefficiency and job titles

Newly elected House Majority Leader Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne County) will announce Wednesday that he has hired outside counsel to conduct a "top-to-bottom review" of the House Democratic Caucus and recommend changes to make it more efficient.

Sturla beats out Gerber for Democratic policy chair

HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster County) has beat out state Rep. Mike Gerber (D-Montgomery County) for House Democratic policy chair.

If Tuesday's leadership elections are any indication, the policy chair position is prime ground to move on to higher positions. Each of this election cycle's two policy chairs, state reps. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) and Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne County) moved up the leadership pecking order Tuesday. Turzai is now minority whip, Eachus was elected majority leader.

HARRISBURG -- Todd Eachus has been elected House Democrat majority leader, according to a spokesman for Keith McCall.

McCall has been elected House Speaker.

DeWeese bowing out of majority leader race?

State Rep. Bill DeWeese (D-Greene County) said in an interview with The Observer-Reporter last week that he will not run for re-election as majority leader.

He'll vie for majority whip instead, he told the paper, while supporting state Rep. Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne County) for his old position.
