2008 Candidates

Kurt Schrader (D)

Former State House Representative

Mike Erickson (R)

Transportation Executive

About the Race

CANDIDATES: Democratic U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley is retiring after six terms. The Democratic candidate is Kurt Schrader, a former state senator and representative. The Republican candidate is Mike Erickson, a transportation executive and the 2006 nominee. In 2006, Hooley captured 54 percent of the vote. George W. Bush won the district in 2004 with 50 percent

RACE PROFILE: The battle for this Salem-area district became markedly more competitive when Hooley, a five-term incumbent, announced her retirement earlier this year. Schrader, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee favorite, emerged as the party nominee in the May primary. On the Republican side, Erickson emerged the victory in a bitter primary against former GOP state party chairman Kevin Mannix. Erickson, who came up 30,000 votes short in his 2006 challenge to Hooley, is badly damaged heading into the general election phase of the campaign with news stories circulating that he allegedly paid for a woman he impregnated to get an abortion.

August 18, 2008 - 6:54 pm — Leans Democratic — #41

Is there anyone who doesn't think this race is quickly slipping off the radar screen for Republicans? If the May story involving Erickson allegedly paying for an ex-girlfriend to get an abortion wasn't bad enough, this weekend comes news that the businessman has been less than honest about a 2004 trip he took to Cuba for what he says was humanitarian reasons. One smart strategist told us today that Erickson is "toast," adding that Schrader hasn't made a significant mistake that would give Republicans an opening. We agree. Erickson is going to have his own money to spend in this race, but money can only get you so far.
