2008 Candidates

Leonard Lance (R)

State Senator

Linda Stender (D)

State Assemblywoman

About the Race

CANDIDATES: Republican U.S. Rep. Michael Ferguson is retiring after four terms. The Republican nominee is state Sen. Leonard Lance; the Democratic candidates are state Assemblywoman Linda Stender; corporate marketing executive Tom Abrams, activist Dean Greco and Bridgewater City Councilman Michael Hsing are running as Independents. Ferguson won the district with 49 percent in 2006. Bush won the district with 53 percent in 2004.

RACE PROFILE: The race for this North Jersey seat that includes parts of Hunterdon, Somerset and Union counties was close in 2006 and it should be close again this cycle. After barely losing to Ferguson, Stender is back. This time her opponent is Lance. Republicans like the state senator, but fundraising is shaping up to be a big issue for the GOP. Through June, Stender had a more than $1 million advantage in cash-on-hand. Still, victory is not assured for the Democrat -- this district went solidly for Bush in 2004

ANALYSIS: Heading into the final weekend, Lance looks poised to eke out a surprising victory. Looking for a sign? This weekend, Democrats are dispatching their highest profile surrogate, former President Bill Clinton, to campaign for Stender. That’s not something a campaign does when its ahead going into the final hours of a race. Also, this week, PolitickerNJ.com reported that Stender’s internal poll numbers showed her a few points down. How did we get to this point? After a year of national Democrats and aligned organizations dumping millions of dollars behind Stender, the Democrat missed when she spent part of the last stretch of the campaign talking about abortion. If there is anything we learned from this cycle, it’s that social issues didn’t matter much. Other Democrats across the country gained traction by focusing on the economy. Should Stender indeed fall short, it would be a disappointing end to a race that Democrats had invested heavily in.
