Lance and Zimmer rally in Union County

KENILWORTH -- Talk about a study in contrast.

Yesterday, Democrats attracted about 1,500 people to Union County College in Cranford to hear former President Bill Clinton stump for Assemblywoman Linda Stender’s (D-Fanwood) congressional bid.

Tonight, despite pitchers of free beer, the Union County Republicans attracted about 100 people to Kenilworth’s VFW hall to support Stender’s rival, state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington), and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dick Zimmer.

Yesterday, Clinton was Stender’s main draw. Tonight, Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin donned a mask of Clinton, called himself “Phil Clinton” and endorsed Lance.

“If anybody wants to join me, I’ll be at the Hooters on Route 22,” he said.

In long-shot quest, Zimmer can’t count on the media

Even if the New Jersey print media industry was thriving, former U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer would still probably be a long-shot in his quest for incumbent Frank Lautenberg’s U.S. Senate seat.

But for a politician whose biggest problem this whole campaign cycle has been has lack of name recognition, the fact that most of the Garden State’s home-grown media outlets are on life support has made getting his name out there that much more difficult, Zimmer said today.

“In previous elections, I’d have Jim Goodman just bugging the hell out of me from The Trenton Times. I don’t believe I’ve been covered by the Trenton Times yet. Maybe the time I campaigned in Hamilton in Septemberfest, but I’m not sure about that,” he said in a phone interview today (Goodman was a casualty of Newhouse’s decision to combine the Statehouse bureaus of The Star-Ledger and Trenton Times last year).

Zimmer, who was plucked out of relative obscurity as a lobbyist in Washington to fill in for the beleaguered and three-week-old candidacy of Goya heir Andy Unanue, is severely trailing in the polls against Lautenberg. But that may have more to do with Zimmer’s visibility than Lautenberg’s winning campaign style. In a Monmouth University/Gannett poll released earlier this week, Lautenberg led 52 percent to 36 percent, but the most telling number with two weeks to the election at the time the poll was taken: 56 percent of voters still didn’t know who Dick Zimmer was.

Lautenberg and Zimmer go head-to-head in Gannett forum

Incumbent U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) defended his “yes” vote on the Wall Street bailout package in a debate today with his Republican opponent, former U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer.

“Within the rescue bill, there is a shoring up of some of the companies that would make credit available,” said Lautenberg, sitting beside Zimmer in an editorial forum sponsored by Gannett Newspapers.

The GOP challenger stood by his opposition to the bailout bill.

Monmouth doesn't go for Obama - or Lautenberg

In battleground Monmouth County, where Democrats hoped to dropkick Republicans from the top down, it didn’t happen.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) defeated Sen. Barack Obama (D-Il.) here by 51.26 percent to 47.39 percent, or 159,461 to 147,424 votes. While losing statewide, GOP U.S. Senate candidate Dick Zimmer defeated U.S.  Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) in Monmouth by a 51.95 percent 45.59 percent.

The Associated Press is projecting Democrat Frank Lautenberg as the winner in the race for U.S. Senator.  Lautenberg, 84, becomes the first person in New Jersey history to win five terms in the U.S. Senate.  He defeated Republican Richard Zimmer, 64, a former three-term Congressman.

CLIFFSIDE PARK -- U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) was in a jubilant mood after voting for himself this morning – so much so that, flanked by his grandchildren, he kicked off his brief press availability with some poetry.

“The sun is shining, the spirits are bright, there’s hope for America after this night,” he said while standing just outside the elementary school that serves as his polling place.

Lautenberg, 84, started off his press availability by praising Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, calling what he expects to be his imminent election a transformational moment.

“It’s really an exciting day, an exciting moment. America is on a journey. Today I think we’ll see the transformation of our country. The substance of Barack Obama as a favorite son of all of America, transcending any concerns of color, religion, culture – that’s gone. And Barack Obama is going to deliver that freedom to the American people,” he said. “As for me, I’ve been here before. Some of you have been too.”

CLIFFSIDE PARK -- U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) was in a jubilant mood after voting for himself this morning – so much so that, flanked by his grandchildren, he kicked off his brief press availability with some poetry.

On Election Day eve, analysts offer predictions

It's election eve, which means that it's time to journey up the Ivory Tower to hear what political analysts think will happen tomorrow.

The four analysts PolitickerNJ.com talked to today were unanimous in predicting a big win for Barack Obama over John McCain both nationally and in New Jersey, and were nearly certain that incumbent U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) would easily beat down the challenge by former Rep. Dick Zimmer.   

They were also unanimous in picking state Sen. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) over Republican Medford Mayor Chris Myers in the 3rd Congressional District.

Three out of four predicated that U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) would beat challenger Dennis Shulman in the 5th District, but by a narrow margin.  

Three out of four also felt that Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) had the edge in her race against state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington) in the 7th Congressional District, while one gave Lance a narrow victory. Read more at Politickernj.com >
