Gov. Janet Napolitano, speaking with reporters Thursday, refused to discuss the possibility that she may be in line for a cabinet or other position within an Obama administration. She did, however, discuss her role on president-elect Obama's transition board, in which she is trying to help assure a smooth passage of power from Pres. George W. Bush to Barack Obama in January.
Even before Tuesday's results showed an electoral vote landslide for Sen. Obama, who was supported early in the Democratic primary season by Napolitano, the role the governor might play in Obama's White House was the topic of broad speculation.
As reporters gathered in Napolitano's office Thursday for the first media briefing by the governor since Sen. Obama was elected president, there was a lot of joking among the press corps about which neighborhood in Washington, D.C. would be best for Napolitano to live, and whether Secretary of State Jan Brewer, who would become governor if Napolitano resigned to take a cabinet post, had been up to the 9th floor to measure the drapes.
Yet Gov. Napolitano was serious when she said, "I'm just not going to answer those questions right now," after being asked whether she would commit to stay in the state or take a position in Washington if offered. "Right now there is nothing to decide, and I think the president-elect is entitled to make his own decisions as he makes them."
