Napolitano to testify in D.C. Thursday

Gov. Janet Napolitano is flying to Washington, D.C. Wednesday night to appear before a congressional committee Thursday, her spokeswoman told PolitickerAZ.com.

Jeanine L'Ecuyer, communications director for Napolitano, said the governor will be addressing a House committee - which one she couldn't remember off hand - regarding the Medicare system as it relates to the states, as well as the overall fiscal conditions of the states.

When asked if this was related to Napolitano's work on President-elect Obama's transition board, L'Ecuyer said, "Only if you want to stretch."

Politico: Napolitano 'most-bandied' name for U.S. AG

Gov. Janet Napolitano is seriously being considered for United States attorney general in the coming administration of president-elect Barack Obama, reports Politico.com.

According to the website:

"The most-bandied about name among elected-officials is Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano. A former U.S. attorney and the state’s first female attorney general, the Democrat has the requisite law enforcement experience and would help Obama bring gender balance to his Cabinet."

Others reportedly being considered are Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, and former deputy U.S. AG Eric Holder. All were key Obama supporters during the election.

Napolitano staying mum on possible Obama administration position

Gov. Janet Napolitano, speaking with reporters Thursday, refused to discuss the possibility that she may be in line for a cabinet or other position within an Obama administration. She did, however, discuss her role on president-elect Obama's transition board, in which she is trying to help assure a smooth passage of power from Pres. George W. Bush to Barack Obama in January.

Even before Tuesday's results showed an electoral vote landslide for Sen. Obama, who was supported early in the Democratic primary season by Napolitano, the role the governor might play in Obama's White House was the topic of broad speculation.

As reporters gathered in Napolitano's office Thursday for the first media briefing by the governor since Sen. Obama was elected president, there was a lot of joking among the press corps about which neighborhood in Washington, D.C. would be best for Napolitano to live, and whether Secretary of State Jan Brewer, who would become governor if Napolitano resigned to take a cabinet post, had been up to the 9th floor to measure the drapes.

Yet Gov. Napolitano was serious when she said, "I'm just not going to answer those questions right now," after being asked whether she would commit to stay in the state or take a position in Washington if offered. "Right now there is nothing to decide, and I think the president-elect is entitled to make his own decisions as he makes them."

Rossi, Gregoire, leaving it all out on the campaign trail

With time quickly running down before next Tuesday's election, which is not just barely over a week away, both gubernatorial candidates are hard at work on the campaign trail.

Republican Dino Rossi and Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire have both announced extensive campaign tours to try to seal the deal in a race that has been neck and neck for much of the past seven months.

Rossi, who lost to Gregoire in 2004 by 133 votes in a hand recount after leading by decreasing margins in the first two machine counts, has been on a statewide "Road to Victory Tour" that commenced immediately after the fourth of five gubernatorial debates on October 10.

Gregoire, for her part, is following an equally grueling schedule. Her 11-day, 26-city tour began on Saturday at a rally with Native Vote, followed by a series of rallies with fellow female Governors Janet Napolitano (D-Ariz.) and Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kans.).

Sec. of State sends 'cease and desist' letter to anti-101 group

Stop the Prop, No on 101, the group working to defeat Proposition 101 - which would prevent government agencies from compelling anyone's participation in a government-run health care program - has been instructed to stop circulating a mailer featuring the state seal.

PolitickerAZ.com confirmed that the office of Secretary of State Jan Brewer sent a cease and desist letter to the organizers of the anti-101 instructing them that they must remove a picture of Gov. Janet Napolitano, a supporter of the effort against Prop. 101, that shows her standing in front of the Great Seal of the State of Arizona. The use of the seal or its likeness is governed by Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer, who has determined that the use by No on 101 is inappropriate and must stop.
