Boehner launches fundraising drive

WASHINGTON - With less than 30 days to Election Day, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-West Chester) is launching a fundraising road trip to benefit GOP House candidates across the country, according to a Republican source familiar with Boehner's plans.

After wrapping up business in the House last week, Boehner set out to help several GOP candidates running in Texas. On Saturday he hosted a fundraising reception for U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, who is facing a long shot challenge from Democrat Larry Joe Doherty in Texas' 10th Congressional District. Today, Boehner is scheduled to host an event for Lyle Larson, who is running to unseat U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez in the 23rd Congressional District.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Boehner is scheduled to host events for Jay Love and Rick Goddard, Republicans who find themselves in dogfights against Democrats in Alabama's 2nd Congressional District and Georgia's 8th Congressional District, respectively. Boehner will also host an event for the Georgia Republican Party.

Botched bailout helps challengers

Nothing promotes harmony more than a crisis, and last week House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader John Boehner could not have been closer. The two, along with the rest of their respective leadership teams, pledged a bipartisan effort to solve the rapidly escalating disaster on Wall Street, and for at least a little while, it looked like that bipartisanship was working.

Both sides saw the potential for a political explosion on the horizon, and yet pressure from the administration and the threat of a further economic disaster has prompted the vast majority of Congress that something, at least, must be done.

Boehner: No deal

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-West Chester) says there's no deal yet on the proposed Wall Street bailout plan.

And then there's this interesting tidbit:

Even the House's Republican leader, John Boehner of Ohio, passed up a chance to praise McCain's leadership powers shortly before the two men met in the Capitol at midday Thursday. Asked by reporters if McCain could help win House Republican votes for the proposed package, Boehner shrugged and said, "Who knows?"

Boehner ponies up for NRCC

WASHINGTON – With voters heading to the polls in just 39 days, House Minority Leader John Boehner is slapping down his dollars for the cash-strapped National Republican Congressional Committee.

At a closed-door meeting of the House Republican Conference this morning, Boehner donated $250,000 to the NRCC’s “Battleground” program, according to several Capitol Hill Republicans familiar with the meeting. The Battleground program is a member-based fundraising drive designed to infuse the party with $12 million for House races. Boehner had already given $550,000 out of his campaign bank account to Battleground.

Boehner wasn’t the only member to pony up. Peter Roskam, an Illinois Republican, provided $50,000. Virginia’s Bob Goodlatte gave $100,000, bringing his total donated to the program to $300,000. Texas’s John Carter, who had already provided $150,000 to the program, gave $100,000. California’s Devin Nunez chipped in $200,000 on top of the $100,000 he had already given.

Hastert talks potential Boehner successors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Should U.S. Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) get another shot as Republican leader in the House? Pose that question to former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and you’ll get a lukewarm endorsement – if it could be called an endorsement at all. “I’m not going to second guess, that’s not for me to decide,” Hastert told PolitickerOH.com Wednesday afternoon. “Everybody does things his own way and for his own reasons. I’m not going to second guess John.”

Blunt set to appear at Guthrie fundraiser

House Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is planning a late-August visit to Louisville to headline a fundraiser for 2nd Congressional District candidate and state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green).

Blunt will be in Kentucky on August 27 for the event, though specific details are not yet confirmed. He is the latest high-profile national Republican to visit in support of Guthrie.

Earlier this year, both Vice President Cheney and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) appeared at seperate fundraising events for Guthrie.

Blunt's appearance will likely provide a further fundraising boost to Guthrie's 2nd District effort against fellow state Sen. David Boswell (D-Owensboro). Guthrie already showed a significant advantage over Boswell at the close of second quarter reports, showing over $660,000 in cash on-hand to Boswell's $45,000.

Boehner: Ohio's Chuck Norris?

In yesterday's Roll Call, U.S. Rep. John Boehner (R-West Chester) credits the recent drop in oil prices to the Republican protests he's leading on Capitol Hill against Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) unwillingness to consider energy legislation before going on summer recess.

Boehner, who was mocked by Democrats for attending a golf fundraiser in the middle of the week, is predicting that Pelosi will ultimately get rolled, and he agreed with fellow Republicans who contended that their protests were already helping to lower oil prices.

"I think it's pretty obvious to [Wall Street] that we're going to win this fight, the only question is when," Boehner said.

Sure, he can control global commodity markets, but when will he put his superpowers to work for Ohio? Maybe he can resurrect coach Woody Hayes. Or turn Youngstown into the next tourist mecca. Help us out, John.
