Potential Senate Candidate Wendy Long to Speak at Conservative Party Event

Wendy Long, an attorney and former Chief Counsel to the Judicial Confirmation Network, seems to be increasing her campaign outreach as she explores a potential run against Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Ms. Long created some buzz when she spoke at a Conservative Party event a month ago, as she was not previously known to be considering a run. Although she has been fairly quiet since, the Kings County Conservative Party just announced he's scheduled to speak at their annual brunch in March.

Maragos Apologizes for Conservative Confusion

U.S. Senate candidate George Maragos raised some eyebrows the other day when he announced the endorsement of the "Conservative Party USA (NY)" on the same day that he, and other potential candidates, met with the far more influential New York State Conservative Party.

Asked about this last night on Inside City Hall, Mr. Maragos offered a round of apologies for the confusion.

"The Conservative Party USA endorsed me, it's a small party. I apologize for the confusion that  may have caused, because that's a different party [from] the New York party headed by Mike Long," he said. "I called Mike Long personally to apologize in that regard."

New Poll Shows New Yorkers Support Governor Cuomo And Dislike Newt Gingrich

A new Siena College poll shows 77 percent of New Yorkers have a "favorable" impression of Governor Andrew Cuomo and most voters support key elements of his 2012 agenda. The poll also showed strong support for President Barack Obama and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Siena also polled voters on the Republican presidential candidates. Though all of the potential GOP nominees scored far lower numbers than President Obama in the poll, New Yorkers clearly have an especially strong distaste for Newt Gingrich. Read More

Marc Cenedella Exits U.S. Senate Race

Marc Cenedella, the CEO of TheLadders.com who faced growing criticisms over blog posts on his website, announced this evening that he would not be challenging Senator Kirsten Gillibrand after all.

"I will not be running for the United States Senate in 2012. I have given a run careful consideration, and I believe Senator Gillibrand is beatable," he said in a statement. "Her early and unfounded attacks on me, her weak poll numbers, and her lethargic quarterly fundraising results all point to a politician in trouble -- and encourage me to challenge her."

New York GOP Accuses Gillibrand of Hypocrisy With Insider Trading

The New York Republican State Committee blasted Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today, accusing her of benefiting from inside information when she was in the House of Representatives. Ms. Gillibrand is currently championing the fight to ban insider trading for federal representatives, which State GOP Chairman Ed Cox claims is hypocritical.

"In purporting to be a champion of insider trading reform - in a fundraising appeal no less - Ms. Gillibrand may be being too cute by half," he said in a statement this morning. "This may not pass the smell test."

Gillibrand Raises Off of Cenedella’s Stumbles

On Friday afternoon, another bad-news story came out about Marc Cenedella, the Internet entrepreneur who seriously considering mounting a challenge to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

According to a report in The Huffington Post, Mr. Cenedella was once sued for back pay and commissions by staffers at TheLadders, the Internet job search site that he founded. His staffers also accused him of threatening to punish them for taking the matter to the courts.

This, of course, comes on the heels of a report in The New York Times last week that Mr. Cenedella operated a blog that made sexist and derogatory remarks about women.

This morning, Sen. Gillibrand sent out a fundraising missive to her email supporters, slamming Mr. Cenedella by name as "an out-of-touch millionaire who writes sexist blog posts, thinks our high unemployment rate isn’t a problem, and sits on the leadership council of Club for Growth, an ultra-conservative organization that supports the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, and trashes Medicare and Social Security." Dems Dub Cenedella ‘Carl Paladino, Jr.’ GOP Sees A Smear

The Mark Cenedella blogging controversy is entering its day of life today with state Democratic Party chair Jay Jacobs issuing a statement comparing the CEO of TheLadders.com and the likely challenger to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand with another recent statewide Republican nominee.

"Marc Cenedella has taken a page out of the Carl Paladino playbook, " Mr. Jacobs says. "This kind of behavior wasn't acceptable for New York last year, and it's not acceptable now. After 24 hours of excuses that were more confusing than a Hitchcock movie, he finally took responsibility for publishing this filth while trying to hide behind the 'someone else wrote them' defense." After Public Drubbing on SOPA and PIPA, Schumer, Gillibrand Hit ‘Command Z’

One Friday earlier this month, Andrew Rasiej, the chairman of NY Tech Meetup and an old-school Internet evangelist, sent out an email to the 20,000 members of the group asking them to do something most had never even considered before: close their laptops, leave their coworking spaces, put their iPads down (but not—god no!—their smart phones, essential to live tweeting) and pick up a picket sign.

“The future of the NY tech community is in jeopardy,” the email read. “We are writing to call you to an Emergency NY Tech Meetup in New York on January 18 so that we can publicly demonstrate our collective dismay at the unprecedented attack currently being made on the Internet and our industry.” Read More
