Fidler: I Never Said Storobin Was a Neo-Nazi

At a press conference announcing Senator Chuck Schumer's endorsement, Councilman Lew Fidler, who's campaigning for the New York State Senate, addressed the dust-up over his comments that his opponent, Republican David Storobin, has "ties to skinheads, and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacist group.”

"I want to answer that, and my campaign folks would probably tell me that I shouldn't," he began. "I never, ever, ever did, or would have, called David Storobin a neo-Nazi."

"I'm not so internet savvy ... I used the word 'ties' instead of 'links,'" he explained, adding that he "never once raised it in public," while Mr. Storobin "continues to raise it in public."

However, his campaign appeared to be strongly, and publicly, doubling down on the comments after they were made at a Brooklyn Young Democrats gathering. They sent out a press release earlier this week entitled, "Councilman Fidler’s Campaign Calls on Mr. Storobin to Come Clean on Ties to White Supremacist Websites."

Fantasy Baseball Expert Lew Fidler Bemoans The State of The Mets

Councilman and State Senate hopeful Lew Fidler was a key player in the early days of fantasy baseball, but he's not happy with the state of his real-life favorite team--The Mets. In the wee hours of this morning, Mr. Fidler posted a note on Facebook lamenting the condition of the Mets heading into the upcoming baseball season.

"The team is going to be DISMAL this year. I lived through and grew up with the miserable yet lovable Mets of the 60's and have never been so sure of a last place finish in my life," Mr. Fidler wrote. Read More

Brooklyn Rabbi Tells Fidler To Back Off

A Brighton Beach rabbi sent an open letter to City Council Lew Fidler telling him to tone down his attacks on David Storobin, his GOP opponent in the State Senate.

"Right from the outset, you have made it clear that you are determined to stake your campaign in the shifty foundation of negativity and fear mongering, " writes Rabbi Mordecltai Tokarsky of the Jewish Center of Brighton Beach.

"You did so when you not once, but many times falsely accused a member of my congregation, your opponent David Storobin, of (and I quote) “having ties to skinheads and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacist groups. Read More

Fidler Campaign Continues to Insist Storobin Could Have ‘Ties to White Supremacist Groups’

Things are certainly heating up quickly in the special election to replace Carl Kruger in the State Senate.

David Storobin, the Republican candidate, held a press conference this afternoon to call his Democratic opponent, Councilman Lew Fidler, to "apologize for false, malicious remarks." The initial remarks in question came from a video posted on Sheepshead Bites, where Mr. Fidler said Mr. Storobin “is busy scrubbing what little history he has because he’s embarrassed about his ties to skinheads, and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacist groups.”

The "Super Jewish" State Senate District

Golden, Fidler & Turner Weigh In On New Jewish District

After Assemblyman Dov Hikind and a key lobbyist in the influential Jewish social services organization Agudath Isreal both praised the State Senate's decision to create an Orthodox Jewish-majority district last week, it seems unlikely that any elected official in southern Brooklyn will blast its creation in the redistricting process.

In an interview with Shimon Gifter, Republican State Senator Marty Golden praised the new district, which will neighbor his. "I was very happy with my seat, obviously," he said. "A new Jewish seat will  be a good seat for the future for the state, and I thought that was well-designed as well."

David Storobin Says Lew Fidler Sides With Gay Community, Not Jewish Community [Update]

Republican State Senate candidate David Storobin accused his Democratic opponent, City Councilman Lew Fidler, of favoring LGBT groups over Jewish groups in their home district.

In an interview last night with Zev Brenner on his Talkline radio show, Mr. Storobin listed his accomplishments, including starting a Jewish club at Rutgers Law School, organizing a rally for Israel and speaking out and writing about Israel, and contrasted that with the record of Mr. Fidler.

"While I was doing that my opponent was organizing rallies not for the Jewish community but for the gay community," he said. Read More

Senate GOP Map Puts Lew Fidler in John Sampson’s District [Updated]

The Senate Republicans are not taking any chances when it comes to Democratic Councilman Lew Fidler's special election candidacy. In their redistricting maps this afternoon, they took his southern Brooklyn home and placed him awkwardly in Senate Minority Leader John Sampson's district.

Councilman Fidler is currently running in a competitive special election to replace outgoing State Senator Carl Kruger, but even if he's victorious, he'll be facing an extremely challenging situation with very few good options if the Senate Republican's draft proposal withstands court challenges and a possible gubernatorial veto. Storobin Begins Campaign Advertising

The special election to replace corrupt State Senator Carl Kruger is getting underway, and GOP candidate David Storobin is ramping up his advertising efforts. Sheepshead Bites notes "[c]ampaign posters for Republican underdog David Storobin’s State Senate campaign have popped up all over the neighborhood in the past week.

Additionally, a reader who lives relatively far outside of the special election district noted that she was seeing advertisements for Mr. Storobin's Facebook page.

David Storobin’s Independent Line Bid Likely to Fail [Updated]

Special election candidate David Storobin, who already has the Republican and Conservative lines in his campaign to replace former State Senator Carl Kruger, will likely be unsuccessful in his efforts to be on a third "School Choice Party" line, a Democratic source told Politicker.

The Democrat explained that 2,387 valid signatures were needed for an independent ballot line in this State Senate district -- an awkward number as it's calculated from the number of votes the district cast in the last gubernatorial election. Apparently Mr. Storobin fell several hundred signatures short of this goal.

Mr. Storobin's bid to be on the School Choice line will still be successful if his signatures remain unchallenged, but the Democratic source suggested strongly that they will be challenged, additionally arguing that the lack of signatures shows a lack of organization for the aspiring State Senator.

New Candidate Emerges for Lew Fidler’s Council Seat

Ivrol Hines, the publisher of the New York Liberty Star, which bills itself as "New York's first choice for Caribbean news," says he'll run for Councilman Lew Fidler's seat when it becomes available.

"If the seat opens, I will be contesting it," Mr. Hines said in an interview with Politicker this morning. "I just think we need someone who actually lives in the community, cares about the community, and shares the concerns and the problems that regular citizens do. And that’s why I’m getting in there."

The prospective candidate's campaign platform is focused heavily on education. "Each year, our budget gets cut. More and more kids are coming into our classrooms," he explained. "There’s nothing a teacher can do when you have 30 plus kids, 7, 8, 9 years old, sitting in one class room."
