Peter Brown's NASA turf war with Mike Sullivan

Council Member Mike Sullivan wasn't very happy about Peter Brown's meddling in his district once concerning the Clear Lake Community Association and another concerning NASA. He probably isn't going to be very happy this Thursday when Brown starts another NASA battle, much like the time Peter Griffin got into a turf war with a cat.

All Space program supporters are invited to a Space Town Hall Meeting and Lunch. Thursday, Oct. 29, 12 Noon to 1:30 pm. at Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant, 1101 NASA Parkway, Houston.

Featuring, Nick Lampson, former U.S. Congressman, Dist. 22 and
Peter Brown, Houston mayoral candidate and City Councilman.

In the past when Brown called for a resolution in support of NASA (as if there was any question about it) Sullivan responded in an email to the Mayor:

From: Sullivan, Mike - CNL

To: Fiederlein, Robert - CNL; Mayor Bill White

Sent: Fri Sep 18 15:20:16 2009
Subject: RE: Support for NASA

Mayor White and Colleagues:

Please do NOT act on Peter Brown's email to you regarding NASA and writing a resolution.

Time for a forum in Clear Lake for Mayor of Houston!

We will have margaritas afterward at a nearby restaurant.

Mayoral Forum Still on at the University of Houston – Clear Lake
The Bay Area Association of Democratic (BAAD) Women put on an excellent forum last week for Houston City Council at-large candidates. The BAAD Women surveyed area groups to determine the most important issues to residents and the queried the candidates on those subjects. This week, the BAAD Women are hosting the Houston mayoral candidates and City Council District E candidates for a similar event.

Although the Houston Chronicle reported that mayoral candidates have canceled some forums around town, the forum here is still on! The event is from 6:30-9 p.

Councilman Sullivan grandstanding in Clear Lake

From the get go I have not been very excited about Mike Sullivan as a Houston City Councilman. He is combative. He has a holier than thou attitude. (literally) He is not a team player on city council. His staff is slow to return calls or respond to letters (if they do) And he loves to grandstand on council and in public. All of this could change since he is being challenged by Wayne Garrison (pictured right). (Nothing like a challenger to get a much needed attitude adjustment.)

Recently Sullivan inspected the railroad crossings along Hwy 3 and was "furious".
Union Pacific poured new asphalt at the Bay Area, Pineloch, El Dorado and Clear Lake City Boulevard crossings about six weeks ago, but the crossings are still uneven, Sullivan said.

Like a bad neighbor, State Farm beware!

Texas residents especially in the Galveston/Harris County area can expect up to a 20% increase in their insurance rates from State Farm. According to the Houston Chronicle:
Homeowners close to the coast will bear the brunt. Those in southern Harris County and in Galveston County will see increases in the 20 percent range, according to State Farm.

The new rates go into effect starting Oct. 1 for existing customers as policies renew, and on Sept. 1 for new customers.
And according to Governor Rick Perry in 2002:
"To make sure Texas consumers are protected, I am asking the Attorney General to investigate the market conduct and marketing practices of our state's biggest homeowner’s insurance companies," Perry continued.

Clear Lake fireworks fizzle out this year

There will be no fireworks for the 4th of July on Clear Lake.

The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Fourth of July fireworks display over the lake is no more.

"There are so many other displays on the lake that that's why the chamber has decided to step away," said spokeswoman Febe Menendez. "Rather, we'll support the other fireworks shows instead of competing with them."

The Clear Lake fireworks were the highlight of the Bay Area over the years. A few years ago when they moved the display from the middle of the lake to the front of the high rise condo complex, they seem to be a dud. Seems to be fitting since the complex owner has filed for bankruptcy. Now there will be none.

Look for the displays in the area as an alternatie. Nassau Bay, Webster, Friendswood, or travel to Houston to see a big event.
