No spending for you in Houston Mayor race.

Outgoing Mayor, Bill White, laid the law on the candidates for Mayor about new spending in 2010. From the Houston Chronicle:
“Texas has not come out of the recession, and sales tax receipts are dropping,” White wrote in a post on his Facebook page Tuesday. “Be sure not to vote for our next mayor based on commitments of more spending in the next two years.”
Candidates Locke, Parker, and Brown make good arguments on how they would not spend any new money since no new money will be coming it. Locke will leave his promise of a Hispanic Museum to private donors to build.

In defense of Stephen Costello, republican, Democrat, or what

Stephen Costello's staff has written a lengthy response to questions about running as republican for the City Council at Large position 1. Unfortunately the lengthy response never addressed the underlining issue: If you have a voting and donation record, why mislead those you are seeking to represent by claiming to be someone you are not.

With all of the internets, it is hard to hide information like this. Donation records are publically available as well as a voting records and Stephen has a clear history of donating to some of the most right wing of his party as well as voting in republican primaries.

Texas Needs Serious Democratic Primary Races in 2010

As the legislative session starts to wind down and eyes look towards 2010, the Texas Democratic Party lacks the serious, high-profile primary races needed to keep voters interested and motivated to vote for Democrats in Texas. We need to hold on to our gains from 2008, and get folks excited about a general election in which we can take back the Governor's mansion and the Texas House. It all starts with a vigorous Democratic primary.

In 2008, we saw unprecedented gains for Democrats here in Texas. Over 2.8 million Democrats voted in the primary, an over-threefold increase over the 830,000 cast in 2004 (granted, that primary was a done deal, but perhaps it further proves my point-no one turns out for an unexciting primary).

Mayor White at the Capitol

Houston Mayor Bill White joined other Texas mayors today at the House Urban Affairs Committee for a general discussion about their cities.

Speaking in the context of the federal government's decision to send stimulus funds to Texas, White said some of that money could be well spent on affordable housing and energy efficiency programs.

White especially touted the city's program of "weatherization" of homes with new insulation and compact fluorescent light bulbs in older neighborhoods, such as Pleasantville. He said such an idea should be brought to "scale" to benefit neighborhoods across the state and conserve energy.

He told committee members about the Houston Hope affordable housing program, too, and then briefly mentioned Hurricane Ike recovery, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and even red-light cameras.

Will the bloggers be in the tank for Sharp over White in Senate race?

Grand Saline blogger Vince Liebowitz had an interesting post this week entitled "Bad News Bill: Is Houston's Mayor Ready for Prime Time?"

The posting detailed many of the things that have gone wrong for Houston Mayor Bill White since he launched his campaign for U.S. Senate late last year.

The core analysis was not terribly different from a story produced by Houston Chronicle reporters Bradley Olson and Alan Bernstein back in January. It was just more up to date and opinionated.

The big difference is the question of whether the blog item represented really independent thought. You see, that's because Liebowitz was among a group of progressive bloggers who got bought a steak dinner by White's Democratic opponent John Sharp back in January.

Mark Strama endorses Bill White for Senate

The man who introduced Houston Mayor Bill White to the University Democrats tonight was not introducing him as mayor of Houston so much as candidate for the U.S. Senate.

What makes me say that?  Mark Strama endorsed the Houston politician.  Strama, who has often bragged of his early endorsement of Barack Obama, compared his endorsement of White to that of our country's President.  He touted the smartness of Barack Obama and of Bill White.

Like in 2007, Strama is making the endorsement well before the year of the election.  Tbe oddity here, of course, is that we don't know with any complete certainty that this election will happen.

Texans don't know Bill White and John Sharp

A new survey on the U.S. Senate race shows, in general, that it's too early to pick favorites in the race to replace U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, though Republicans tend to have the advantage.

The most interesting thing in the Public Policy Polling survey is that 43 percent of those questioned did not know enough about Houston Mayor Bill White to have an opinion about him. That's not unusual for regional politicians looking at running for statewide office.

The same kind of numbers occur for state Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, who is looking at running for the seat. She's unknown by 48 percent of those surveyed.

Gun rights advocate has White in the cross-hairs

Scott O'Grady, a strong gun advocate and Air Force veteran whose survival and rescue in Bosnia became the basis for Behind Enemy Lines, calls out Houston Mayor Bill White for being a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun control organization that backs such initiatives as requiring gun owners to report lost weapons, gun offender registries, limiting the ability of the mentally ill to buy guns and prohibiting the carrying of guns in certain "sensitive locations."
