Climate change bill is difficult vote for Texas Dems

The American Energy Alliance, a fossil fuel group, announced yesterday it would sponsor radio ads in San Antonio aimed at swaying Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio, to vote against the House climate-change bill. The House Energy and Commerce Committee is scheduled to take its first vote on the bill next week.

Gonzalez is one of several House Democrats whose home-state industries feel they are threatened by the legislation, which seeks to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions over the next 40 years. Gonzalez's home town is the headquarters of Valero, one of the largest refiners in the country. Rep. Gene Green, D-Houston, is similarly worried that his district's refineries and chemical plants will face huge cost increases if the bill passes.

A time to raise, a time to disgorge... Hutchison will donate Stanford money, too

Scores of federal lawmakers in both parties have received campaign donations from R. Allen Stanford, the Texas banker accused of running an $8 billion investment swindle.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison received $7,300, per the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. This evening, an aide says she will donate that sum to charity. (The charity hasn't been picked yet.)

This morning, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced that he will disgorge $28,150 in donations linked to Stanford.

Hutchison ranks 13th among Stanford recipients, well behind four other Texans: Sen. John Cornyn, and Reps. Pete Sessions (R-Dallas), Charlie Gonzalez (D-San Antonio) and Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land).

In the poll Castro held a double digit lead over DeBerry-Mejia and Cibrian. Of the 400 likely voters 38 percent supported Castro, 16 for DeBerry-Mejia and 10 for Cibrian. Even more surprising is that Castro maintained those double digit numbers in Districts 8, 9 and 10 on the city's north side. Cibrian currently represents District 8 and DeBerry-Mejia's primary support is from District 9.
