Locke misleading again

Misleading the public is becoming a staple of the Gene Locke campaign and given his past record it can be expected to continue if he becomes Mayor.

In his first attack ad against Annise Parker he claims she voted for 70 fee increases during the 6 years on City Council, but as the Houston Chronicle has pointed out, the majority of the fees were increases in fire and and health services. (nice fact check!)

While the claim is true — she did vote with 13 other council members in 2002 for a city budget that included more than 70 fee increases, according to Houston Chronicle archives — it does not note that the fee hikes were mostly confined to fire and health department permits and inspections.

Team Locke in desperation mode

Gene Locke is looking for votes anywhere he can, even from the white wing of the right wing party including Paul Bettencourt who quit just a few days after being re-elected to the Harris County Tax Assessor. What could be worse than seeking the endorsement of a quitter? How about...... seeking the endorsement of Steven Hotze?

Locke has also met with and sought the endorsement of Dr. Steven Hotze, a longtime local kingmaker in conservative politics and author of the Straight Slate in 1985, a coterie of eight City Council candidates he recruited who ran on an anti-gay platform.

Of course this may help Locke with the white wing loony right, but who knows what they intend to do.

Election winners for Houston CIty Council

OK. I am going out on a limb here. Winners for 2009:

Melissa Noriega. Her second term as an at-large is in the bag and she deserves it. Very good City Council Member. Congratulations. (unopposed)

Ed Gonzales. Recently won a special election and will return as City Council. Congrats. (unopposed)

James Rodriguez. A great Member of City Council. Returns for his 2nd term. Congrats!!!!

Anne Clutterbuck. Winner. Will return for a third term. Congrats. Her district will continue to be served well.

Jarvis Johnson. Winner. Second term for Jarvis. Good pick.

Wanda Adams. Winner. Second term for Wanda. Another good pick.

Mike Sullivan. I really have no idea what Mike has done or hasn't done for the district especially in Clear Lake, but I do know he isn't well liked and the more he jumps on the anti-Hispanic bandwagon, the more I dislike him.

Oops he did it again

Oops! I Did it again to your heart. Got lost In this game; oh, baby.
Oops! You Think that I'm sent from above... I'm not that innocent.
--Britney Spears. Oops I did it again.

Candidate for Mayor Peter Brown did it again. As I said yesterday, With unlimited wealth you can expect Brown to continue his air attack and mailers attacking his opponents. And sure enough he did it again. According to Muse:
Brown sent out a mail piece that attacked both Annise Parker and Gene Locke. I heard it was sent to women Republican voters. You can see it right here. The Chron has Mayor White's response.

Brown not buying votes

It is ridiculous to think that Peter Brown is buying votes from the Black community. Not only is it hard to come up with a price for a vote, it is extremely illegal. EXTREMELY, I tell you! It just isn't happening. But something else is.

According to Rick Casey of the Houston Chronicle, Peter Brown has spent $3.2 million of his wife's money to become Mayor of Houston. With $3.2 Million Brown can flood the airwaves with TV commercials and mailers that contain false or extremely misleading information and his opponents would not have the time or money to counter the flood. There ought to be a law.

Luckily the City Controller race is non partisan

According to a poll conducted by the Houston Chronicle, City Council Member Ron Green is leading the pack of three for City Controller in front of Pam Holm and MJ Khan. Houston city elections are non partisan and for Holm and Khan that may be a good thing.

Over the last decade the Republican party hasn't been a very good watchdog of our tax dollars leading us into a great recession and the collapse of our auto industries, wall street, the housing market, and the economy in general. Under the keen eye of cuddles, the school yard lap dog, our debt nearly doubled and left the next administration with a record deficit and a fiscal hole that will take years to get out of.

Recommendations on Houston City elections.

For Mayor: Annise Parker. The City of Houston has an opportunity to elect one of the most qualified and complete candidates Houston has provided to voters in a long time, City Controller Annise Parker. It is just that simple. She has the fiscal knowledge to lead this city in the time of diminishing income due to the recession. She has her 20 years of experience in oil and gas and her 12 years experience on City Council and as Controller. Houston can benefit from Annise Parker as Mayor.

City Controller: Ron Green. A City Council Member for 6 years, owner of a small business, an attorney, and served as chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee.

What are the odds?

On the last day of filing for City Council races, Council Member Anne Clutterbuck drew an opponent, Randy Locke. What are the odds that two individuals running for Houston City offices are both named Locke?

According to Randy Locke there is no family relationship with Gene Locke running for Mayor. Unlike Gene, Randy doesn't have any money. He doesn't have a website, and there is little if any information about him on the internets. Who is he and why would he challenge Anne who has been very successful as a city council member?

Randy has promised a website in the future. With just over a month before the election, he might want to hurry up. You have to wonder if there are games being played here. Really, what are the odds that two unrelated individuals named Locke are on the ballot together for Houston City elections?

Almost reminds me of another game.

In defense of Stephen Costello, republican, Democrat, or what

Stephen Costello's staff has written a lengthy response to questions about running as republican for the City Council at Large position 1. Unfortunately the lengthy response never addressed the underlining issue: If you have a voting and donation record, why mislead those you are seeking to represent by claiming to be someone you are not.

With all of the internets, it is hard to hide information like this. Donation records are publically available as well as a voting records and Stephen has a clear history of donating to some of the most right wing of his party as well as voting in republican primaries.

Stephen Costello, Democrat, republican, or whatever?

Stephen Costello, candidate for City Council at large position 1, is having an identity crisis, with local Democratic clubs wondering just who he really is. At a club meeting in Clear Lake, Costello stately clearly he was an Independent.

Party affiliation doesn't matter in City Council races, but we all know who is who, unless the candidate is new to the political scene. Attempting to mislead anyone should and will be met with skepticism and an occasional blog post.

Turns out Costello is anything but independent. Not only has he donated to some of the most far right republican candidates, DeLay, Olson, Sekulla-Gibbs, and Culberson, he voted in the republican primaries in 2000, 2004, and 2008.
