Texas Progressive Alliance roundup

It's Monday, and that means it is time for another edition of the Texas Progressive Alliance's weekly round-up.

Neil at Texas Liberal writes about the relocation of the National Cash Register company from Dayton, Ohio to Georgia. Treating people like dirt for 200 years gives Southern states an advantage in creating a so-called business friendly low-tax low-wage climate.

BossKitty at TruthHugger is so amazed at the short sighted policies our state and country continue to pursue. Buy American is a path to destruction. Isolationist Trends Protect US From Reality

House Committee Appointments: 18 Republicans, 16 Democrats

Here's the list

11:30am, Initial thoughts:

Rep. Straus has balance in the Committee appointments, in terms of raw numbers. The only major Committee that is surprising, to me, is Rep. Rene Oliveira to Chair Ways & Means. That means that Democrats will be responsible for tax policy this session -- that could be very interesting.

If I had one ticket to see any Committee all session, it would be State Affairs. Just look at the names -- Solomons Chair, Menendez Vice-Chair...and then Byron Cook, Tom Craddick, Pete Gallego, Sylvester Turner, David Swinford, Rene Oliveira, Charlie Geren, David Farabee, Delwin Jones, Eddie Lucio III, Harvey Hilderbran, Diana Maldonado (what an appointment for her!).

Both Place 1 Candidates' Political Contributions History 100% Democratic

Both Chris Riley and Perla Cavazos will have a difficult time labeling their opponent "Republican-lite" in this year's Austin City Council Place 1 race.

Both candidates' political contributions in state races are 100% Democratic, according to TEC online records.

Of course, I wouldn't imagine this is news to any of the people closely involved in this race. But for the rest of us, I thought I would take a look and see what kind of candidates Riley and Cavazos had contributed to in the past.

Chris Riley contributed to the following Democratic campaigns and groups:

Travis County Democratic Party, Neighbor to Neighhbor PAC, Valinda Bolton, Donna Howard, Texas League of Conservation Voters, Rose Spector, Chris Bell, Juan Garcia, Eddie Rodriguez, Annie's List, Kirk Watson, Bree Buchanan, Stephen Yelenosky, Elliot Naishtat, Mark Strama, Jim Sharp, Jim Sylvester, Glen Maxey.

However, charges were dismissed against state Rep. Mike Krusee (R-Round Rock) for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Rick Noriega (D-Houston), she outlined her campaign's final days in an interview with PolitickerTX.com. She said her Republican opponent, Bryan Daniel, would not be an independent voice for the community because of the large, last-minute contributions he has taken from a handful of donors.

Statesman endorses Maldonado and Dippel

The Austin American-Statesman endorsed two Democrats running in competitive state House races. In House District 52, the Statesman backed Diana Maldonado, a former Round Rock school board president, and supported La Grange agricultural consultant Donnie Dippel for House District 17.

The editorial board backed both candidates in large measure because it said their opponents might support the current House leadership, which the board opposes.
