Cornyn says GOP successor to Hutchison is "no slam dunk"

Sen. John Cornyn has speculated in the last week that Senate colleague Kay Bailey Hutchison would quit the Senate in the fall to focus on a run for governor. Cornyn said this morning that replacing her with a Republican will require "a real race" and "certainly not a walk."

Keeping the seat in Republican hands is a major responsibility for Cornyn, who chairs his party's fundraising arm in the Senate. He sees an improved climate for Republicans in 2010 -- by taking advantage of anxieties over federal spending and Democratic energy policies -- but isn't predicting big gains for the GOP in Senate seats.

A Lead Balloon

Reading that the President of the United States, overwhelmingly elected last November because the nation wanted a change, is mulling over the concept of "preventative detention" of those suspected of being terrorists was the kind of shock no decent person should have to sustain the first thing in the morning.

From the NY Times:

President Obama told human rights advocates at the White House on Wednesday that he was mulling the need for a “preventive detention” system that would establish a legal basis for the United States to incarcerate terrorism suspects who are deemed a threat to national security but cannot be tried, two participants in the private session said.

GOP Surrogates Advocate Treasonous Acts?

When former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee was running in the Republican presidential primary last election cycle he would often tote around his favorite actor and self-proclaimed superhero, Chuck Norris, to introduce him and warm up the crowds.

Once a surrogate for a Republican running for President of the United States, Norris now wishes to be President of Texas just as soon as the Lone Star State secedes from the Union:

On Glenn Beck's radio show last week, I quipped in response to our wayward federal government, "I may run for president of Texas."

That need may be a reality sooner than we think.

Adequate notice wasn't given on Cheney hearing

When Willacy County Defense Attorney Juan Angel Guerra failed to show up before Judge Manual Bañales in court Wednesday, a defense attorney for Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez attempted to dismiss the case and asked that Guerra be held in contempt of court and face sanctions.

As it turns out, the actions of the lame-duck DA may have been justified, and Cheney’s team may have jumped the gun.
