Cheney shoots Hutchinson in the face

Cheney has publicly endorse Hutchinson for Governor. This is about as disastoraous as Lee Brown endorsing Gene Locke, Tony Sanchez endorsing Peter Brown, or my favorite Sarah Palin endorsing Rick Perry. (Although Perry actually wanted Palin, in a political way) Hutchinson responded:
“I am so *&^%$# pleased,” Hutchison said Wednesday. “I fear the former vice president so much. I just hope he doesn't shoot me in my *&^damn frickin face!”
OK. So I took a tiny bit of liberty with her response. What could be worse for Hutchinson than an endorsement from Darth Vader who won't keep his damn mouth shut like every other former vice president does? Instead Cheney has become a camera whore looking for every opportunity to tell Obama how he is screwing up his war in Afhganistan and Iraq.

Hutchinson: Texas sucks.

Leave it to a republican running for Governor to acknowledge that Texas is leading the pack in the race to last passing Mississippi as the "Thank God for Mississippi" state. As David Ortez wrote:

Texas is:

  • 51st (counting the District of Columbia) in the percentage of people older than 25 who have a high school diploma.
  • 50th in the percentage of unemployed people receiving benefits
    49th in teacher pay.
  • 49th in benefits paid to women, infants and children under the WIC program.
  • 46th in SAT scores.

And look at what we’re at the top in:
The highest homeowners insurance rates in the country.

Hutchison fought for dealerships, now opposes 'clunkers' program that boosts sales

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison got a lot of credit a couple months ago for sticking up to protect GM and Chrysler dealerships that were slated to close after the automaker bankruptcies. The automakers were forced to defend the closure of hundreds of dealerships, after Hutchison and other members of the Senate Commerce Committee complained about the way the dealer closures were done. The movement (there is no shortage of political sympathy for car dealers in Congress) spread to the House, where lawmakers inserted a provision in an appropriations bill that would require the car companies to reinstate their franchise agreements with the dealers.

It's blogger roundup time!

This week from the Texas Progressive Alliance blogs, emission from drilling are more than cars and airports, women are running things in Denton County, Liberty University Democrats lose their recognition, President Obama's political coalition leaves out the far-right and the poor, and much more.

This week’s round-up was compiled by Teddy from Left of College Station.

John Coby at Bay Area Houston notes that Rick Perry signed a bill to stop electricity deregulation in East Texas while we poor saps continue to be screwed with high electricity rates.

On Bluedaze: Barnett Shale operators continued to endanger public health and safety by ignoring the peer-reviewed study that showed emission from drilling were more than all the cars and airports in the DFW area.

Cornyn says GOP successor to Hutchison is "no slam dunk"

Sen. John Cornyn has speculated in the last week that Senate colleague Kay Bailey Hutchison would quit the Senate in the fall to focus on a run for governor. Cornyn said this morning that replacing her with a Republican will require "a real race" and "certainly not a walk."

Keeping the seat in Republican hands is a major responsibility for Cornyn, who chairs his party's fundraising arm in the Senate. He sees an improved climate for Republicans in 2010 -- by taking advantage of anxieties over federal spending and Democratic energy policies -- but isn't predicting big gains for the GOP in Senate seats.

Texas Needs Serious Democratic Primary Races in 2010

As the legislative session starts to wind down and eyes look towards 2010, the Texas Democratic Party lacks the serious, high-profile primary races needed to keep voters interested and motivated to vote for Democrats in Texas. We need to hold on to our gains from 2008, and get folks excited about a general election in which we can take back the Governor's mansion and the Texas House. It all starts with a vigorous Democratic primary.

In 2008, we saw unprecedented gains for Democrats here in Texas. Over 2.8 million Democrats voted in the primary, an over-threefold increase over the 830,000 cast in 2004 (granted, that primary was a done deal, but perhaps it further proves my point-no one turns out for an unexciting primary).

Hutchison Supporters Respond to Perry Consultant's "Whorehouse" Comments

When Democrats talk about broadening their appeal, we usually use the word "big tent."

Republicans, or at least Rick Perry consultant Dave Carney, prefer to use the word "whorehouse."

From a recent article written by Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News:

Perry political consultant Dave Carney said the Republican governor agrees the party should welcome new voters.

"But that doesn't mean you take your principles and throw them out the door and become a whorehouse and let anybody in who wants to come in, regardless," Carney said.

Whether he meant to or not (and, as you might expect, Team Perry issued a statement saying Carney's statement had nothing to do with the Governor's race), his words upset quite a few supporters of Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Rick Perry Flip-Flops on Secession

I guess all of the late-night TV punchlines have gotten to Rick Perry, who published a Letter to the Editor in the San Antonio Express-News today in which he asserts he's never been "secede from the union." Except for his comments at the Austin tea party on tax day where he pretty much insinuates just that.

FoxNews, April 15, 2009:

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot.

Hutchison bumper sticker contest: National appeal

Funny thing about the winning bumper sticker for Kay Bailey Hutchison's governor's race. The Hutchison campaign held a contest and a pair of political bloggers won with a snappy design featuring a flag that looks a little like the Bush-Cheney campaign logos. The winners were Matt Margolis and Ali Akbar. Margolis was a blogger for Bush, so that makes sense. But always vigilant Rick vs. Kay notes something else: Neither are from Texas. Margolis is from Buffalo, New York and Akbar lives in Georgia. So the winner of Kay's bumper sticker contest can't even vote for her.

Well, maybe: Akbar does have Texas roots, as our Emily Ramshaw
