Time to give thanks

This is always a special time. So while you are gathered around the turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie waiting to over eat then sit and watch the football game on your new flat screen tv, take a moment to give thanks.

  1. Give thanks if your family can afford health insurance because 42 million other Americans can not.
  2. Give thanks if you are employed because 10% of Americans are not.
  3. Give thanks if your family is free from  a serious illness.
  4. Give thanks we have Medicare to protect our seniors when the private insurance companies leave them to die.
  5. Give thanks we have Social Security for protection against the downfall of Wall Street.
  6. Give thanks that we have a President trying to end the never ending war in Afghanistan and Iraq, to bring our troops back to their families.

Now go watch some football and get a second helping of turkey.

Cheney shoots Hutchinson in the face

Cheney has publicly endorse Hutchinson for Governor. This is about as disastoraous as Lee Brown endorsing Gene Locke, Tony Sanchez endorsing Peter Brown, or my favorite Sarah Palin endorsing Rick Perry. (Although Perry actually wanted Palin, in a political way) Hutchinson responded:
“I am so *&^%$# pleased,” Hutchison said Wednesday. “I fear the former vice president so much. I just hope he doesn't shoot me in my *&^damn frickin face!”
OK. So I took a tiny bit of liberty with her response. What could be worse for Hutchinson than an endorsement from Darth Vader who won't keep his damn mouth shut like every other former vice president does? Instead Cheney has become a camera whore looking for every opportunity to tell Obama how he is screwing up his war in Afhganistan and Iraq.

John Cornyn's letter on rape and arbitration

    The Honorable John Cornyn
    517 Hart Senate Office Bldg.
    Washington, DC 20510
    Main: 202-224-2934
    Fax: 202-228-2856

    Dear Constituents,

This week I voted against an amendment to a defense bill that would prohibit mandatory binding arbitration clauses involving rape for any contractor receiving federal tax dollars. I would like to explain my vote.

The amendment was a result of a case involving a KBR employee, Jamie Jones. Jones was gang-raped by coworkers while working in Iraq but because of KBR's arbitration clause, she could not bring a suit against KBR to a jury trial. What many do not understand is that arbitration is a good policy for rape victims.

Ending forced arbitration in defense contracts

It just doesn't make sense. KBR is awarded a no bid multi-billion dollar contract with the Department of Defense, supposedly to support those who fight for our rights to the Constitution and then they require their employees to give up their rights to the 7th Amendment of the Constitution. The 7th Amendment guarantees our right to a civil trial, but KBR requires every employee to sign a binding arbitration clause. From People Over Profits:
By now, many of you have heard the story of Jamie Leigh Jones, a young employee of a Halliburton subsidiary called KBR who became a victim of rape while working in Iraq.

$100 Million deficit. Houston Police may be asked to take a furlough?

Police to be furloughed? No, but according to Isiah Carey, Fox 26 Houston, it may happen, key word "may". The City of Houston will be facing a steep deficit for the year 2010, that at least seems to be true. From Isiah's blog (that is a perfect example of a poorly designed blog):
Sources have said and we've confirmed through the City Controller's office - Houston faces a $103 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year of 2010. Janice Evans with the Controllers office tells the Insite Annise Parker will announce the big hole this Tuesday and Wednesday to council members.
Unfortunately what was not confirmed and clearly speculation on Isiah's part was the furlough of city workers.

And it's one, two, three, what are we fightin for?

Don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Afghanistan.

8 years and counting. Today another 4 American soldiers were killed in Afghanistan. Cleaning up Bush's mistakes will continue at least for another 2 years while we complete whatever mission we accomplished in Iraq. The results of these wars, one we have never completed, and one we never should have started, will linger for decades.

As I said years ago, let's start the draft with no deferments and watch the young, patriotic, conservatives, tuck tail and run to the nearest anti-war protest.

Before you trust a Republican with your health care

The republican party and the insurance industry are out in force with their scare tactic talking points including rationing of health care, death squads for seniors, out of control spending, yada yada. But before you put your health care in the hands of the republicans just remember:

These are the same guys who:

    1. Told you Iraq had weapons of mass destruction
    2. Told you to buy duct tape and plastic before the invasion of Iraq (and many of you did)
    3. Have spent nearly $1Trillion of your money on invading the wrong country
    4. Scared you with talk about a "mushroom cloud" before the invasion
    5. Told you that tax cuts for the richest Americans would help you, the little guy
    6. Turned a $250 surplus into a $450 deficit
    7. Nearly doubled our debt to other countries
    8. Put the country in the worst recession in it's history
    9. Attempted to privatize social security right before the wall street crash
    10. Said tort reform in Texas would lower our insurance rates
    11. Who deregulated electricity in Texas with the help of Ken Lay resulting in higher rates
    12. Who deregulated insurance in Texas resulting in the highest rates in the nation
    13. Who deregulated college tuition Texas which resulted in skyrocketing costs
    14. Who was in charge of this country for 8 full years and did nothing about immigration

Before you trust a republican with your health care, pull your head out and smell their deception.

    Republican Senator booed while teabagging.

It just doesn't get any better than this:

Cornyn was booed at the start and close of his remarks, which assailed actions in Washington; there were no boos while he awarded a Purple Heart to a Copperas Cove resident injured in Iraq in 2006.

“You’re the problem,” a crowd member hollered.

On second thought. I think it does get better with what Cornyn said:

“I didn’t want to come some place that I wasn’t wanted.”

Uh too late Senator. You have a revolt in your party and unfortunately that brings out the worst. The very people calling for an end to taxes probably work for NASA.

    Exiting the Tent

Actually, I have no doubt that leaders of the party of wingnuts are sincere in saying they are sorry about the shooting of Dr. Tiller yesterday by a 'pro-life' activist. The rational and decent outliers in the party are rapidly finding out they're associated with raving maniacs, and leaving. There were enough people of goodwill to elect President Obama, and polls show that the majority deplore U.S. war on Iraq, torture, and fiscal irresponsibility and associate them with the maladministration just past. They.Did.It.

    The Big Lie Is Back

Watching Kit Bond insist that House Speaker Pelosi couldn't claim that if CIA briefings were given her about torture she could not do anything about it anyway, I am once again seeing the putrefying lies wingers use to refute damaging charges. This morning on CBS news Bond claimed that she could have 'called for confidential hearings' - an action which was routinely ignored by the wingnuts in charge of the House at the time she was somewhat briefed.

Only those with short memories seem to inhabit the voter category for wingers, which is hardly a surprise. If memories include depression days, their deregulation mantra would long ago have been rooted out.
