Perla for Austin Campaign Kickoff - "Not Just One More Vote with the Majority"

Disclosure: Perla is a friend of mine.  I gave her $25.  Sometimes we eat BBQ together.

Last night the Perla Cavazos for Austin campaign got kicked off at Nuevo Leon, where Austinites packed into the East Austin establishment to get their hands on Perla Cavazos's pink & gold signs and hear her plan for the future of Austin's economy, affordability and healthcare issues.

Perla started off her speech by touching on the economic crisis, referencing the recent news that Starbucks was closing over 300 stores, the locations on South Congress and Stassney being two of them.  Perla, who I first got to know when volunteering for Democratic candidate for Congress Larry Joe Doherty, admitted she was "not a Starbucks girl" (true:  while blockwalking, we had a heated debate over Little City versus Progress) but that she "knows a lot of people who have jobs that pay even less than what baristas make, and their jobs don't come with health insurance.

Morning Round-Up

  • Remember, contribution limits are now $2,400 per individual for a primary and $2,400 for a general election for federal candidates in the 2010 elections. (The Hill)
  • Kay Bailey Hutchison hires a campaign manager: Rick Wiley. (Roll Call)
  • Larry Joe Doherty was the biggest loser among Texas 2008 candidates. That's not a bad thing, it's the fact that he got the most raw votes of any candidate that didn't win. In fact, his 143,719 votes was more than 9 other people who did get elected to Congress in Texas. TX-10 had the most voters of any congressional district in Texas: 333,083. (Austin Chronicle)

McCaul Considering Run for Attorney General

Following this morning's announcement from former solicitor general Ted Cruz that he will run for attorney general if Greg Abbott does not seek re-election, Congressman Michael McCaul said he is also considering entering the statewide race.

McCaul sent the following note to the Statesman's Gardner Selby:

I am focused on serving the people of the 10th Congressional District of Texas for a third term. I am humbled that so many people have encouraged me to run for Texas Attorney General. But as of right now that office is not vacant and I support Greg Abbott for re-election. If it becomes vacant, I will seriously consider whether that is the best way for me to continue to serve the state of Texas.

With nearly 100 percent of precincts reporting, McCaul received 54 percent of the vote, according to the Secretary of State. Democrat Larry Joe Doherty, a former Houston trial lawyer and TV court judge, won 43 percent.

Doherty concedes: 'Gerrymander,' lack of money reasons for loss

AUSTIN - Democrat Larry Joe Doherty conceded late Tuesday night in his 10th Congressional race against U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Austin). District 10 spans from Travis to Harris counties, and Doherty said the district was intentionally drawn to make it difficult for a Democrat to win.

McCaul sets off last-minute GOP alarms

WASHINGTON - House Republicans are expressing last-minute concern over the re-election bid of U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Austin), who finds himself in a surprisingly difficult fight against television personality Larry Joe Doherty.

Earlier this week, McCaul, a second term congressman from Austin, sent out a fundraising appeal to fellow Republican members that one House aide described as "urgent" in tone. In the last several days alone, McCaul has received $20,000 in checks from members.
