TX-10: Democrat Jack McDonald Forms Exploratory Committee

High-tech executive Jack McDonald of Austin has formed an exploratory for the congressional seat currently head by Michael McCaul, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

From the Statesman:

... an Austin high-tech executive, John T. “Jack” McDonald, confirmed today that he’s started a federal exploratory committee in advance of likely running for McCaul’s seat as a Democrat next year—regardless of whether McCaul, R-Austin, hunts a fourth two-year term.

But the 45-year-old lawyer-business, who’s ceo of Austin-based Perficient, said he and his wife, Carla, have been encouraged by Democrats, independents and Republicans who’d like to see someone with business experience in Congress at a time the national and international economy need attention.

Former aide to Attorney General Greg Abbott launches Web site to run for Abbott's job

Former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz has launched a new Web site dedicated to running for attorney general as a Republican next year. Cruz created a campaign committee in January.

As a top aide to Attorney General Greg Abbott for five years, it is unlikely Cruz would actually run unless Abbott carries through with speculated plans to run for either lieutenant governor or the U.S. Senate in 2010. But that rests on what Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison decide to do.

If Hutchison resigns to run for governor, then Dewhurst could run for Senate. But if Gov. Rick Perry decides to forgo facing Hutchison in the GOP primary, then Dewhurst might try to outflank her in the governor's race by running to the right in the Republican primary.

Dear Congressman McCaul,

As constituents and voters, we are expressing our dissatisfaction with your vote against the economic stimulus package. Making the unanimous Republican vote obviously partisan is the ludicrous proposal by the House Republicans of trying to stimulate the economy with nothing but tax cuts.

Speaking as a business owner and successful investor and as a family who has paid ample local, state and federal taxes, being over-taxed is not the problem.

McCaul Considering Run for Attorney General

Following this morning's announcement from former solicitor general Ted Cruz that he will run for attorney general if Greg Abbott does not seek re-election, Congressman Michael McCaul said he is also considering entering the statewide race.

McCaul sent the following note to the Statesman's Gardner Selby:

I am focused on serving the people of the 10th Congressional District of Texas for a third term. I am humbled that so many people have encouraged me to run for Texas Attorney General. But as of right now that office is not vacant and I support Greg Abbott for re-election. If it becomes vacant, I will seriously consider whether that is the best way for me to continue to serve the state of Texas.

Republican Ted Cruz Files for Attorney General

In another sign that Greg Abbott will likely seek higher office next year, the state's former solicitor general and Abbott protege Ted Cruz has filed papers to run for attorney general.

Cruz says he will only run if Abbott does not seek re-election.

From the Austin American-Statesman:

Cruz, who filed papers starting a state campaign committee Jan. 15, said today he acted about 11 months before the start of the filing period for candidates on the 2010 GOP primary ballot because he needs to get around the state.

“Texas is a big state and conducting a statewide campaign takes time and energy,” Cruz said. He spoke after Texas Lawyer broke word of his campaign filing.

McCaul defeats former TV judge

Voters of the 10th Congressional District delivered a little "Texas Justice" of their own, electing U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Austin) to a third term. With nearly 100 percent of precincts reporting, McCaul received 54 percent of the vote, according to the Secretary of State. Democrat Larry Joe Doherty, a former Houston trial lawyer and TV court judge, won 43 percent.

Doherty concedes: 'Gerrymander,' lack of money reasons for loss

AUSTIN - Democrat Larry Joe Doherty conceded late Tuesday night in his 10th Congressional race against U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Austin). District 10 spans from Travis to Harris counties, and Doherty said the district was intentionally drawn to make it difficult for a Democrat to win.
