Election winners for Houston CIty Council

OK. I am going out on a limb here. Winners for 2009:

Melissa Noriega. Her second term as an at-large is in the bag and she deserves it. Very good City Council Member. Congratulations. (unopposed)

Ed Gonzales. Recently won a special election and will return as City Council. Congrats. (unopposed)

James Rodriguez. A great Member of City Council. Returns for his 2nd term. Congrats!!!!

Anne Clutterbuck. Winner. Will return for a third term. Congrats. Her district will continue to be served well.

Jarvis Johnson. Winner. Second term for Jarvis. Good pick.

Wanda Adams. Winner. Second term for Wanda. Another good pick.

Mike Sullivan. I really have no idea what Mike has done or hasn't done for the district especially in Clear Lake, but I do know he isn't well liked and the more he jumps on the anti-Hispanic bandwagon, the more I dislike him.

Peter Brown fails to launch at lunch

I didn't think this was a good idea in the first place.

Peter Brown was featured at a meeting of the Space Advocates today. The "Space Advocates" started out a few years ago as "Space Advocates for Lampson". As a candidate and Congressman, Lampson would always speak to a packed house of those interested in the Space Program. As a member of the Science Committee, Lampson, had exclusive insight into the workings of Congress and kept those in attendance aware of the situation. It was always a great bipartisan event. Once elected, Space Advocates for Lampson was renamed to just Space Advocates.

After the NASA area elected a rookie to Congress, Space Advocates went on a long hiatus until today.

Peter Brown's NASA turf war with Mike Sullivan

Council Member Mike Sullivan wasn't very happy about Peter Brown's meddling in his district once concerning the Clear Lake Community Association and another concerning NASA. He probably isn't going to be very happy this Thursday when Brown starts another NASA battle, much like the time Peter Griffin got into a turf war with a cat.

All Space program supporters are invited to a Space Town Hall Meeting and Lunch. Thursday, Oct. 29, 12 Noon to 1:30 pm. at Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant, 1101 NASA Parkway, Houston.

Featuring, Nick Lampson, former U.S. Congressman, Dist. 22 and
Peter Brown, Houston mayoral candidate and City Councilman.

In the past when Brown called for a resolution in support of NASA (as if there was any question about it) Sullivan responded in an email to the Mayor:

From: Sullivan, Mike - CNL

To: Fiederlein, Robert - CNL; Mayor Bill White
Cc:
Sent: Fri Sep 18 15:20:16 2009
Subject: RE: Support for NASA

Mayor White and Colleagues:

Please do NOT act on Peter Brown's email to you regarding NASA and writing a resolution.

Will Hispanics dump Locke's endorsement?

What happened to the black/brown coalition that Gene Locke promised to the Tejano Democrats? From the get-go this was a bad idea not because it wouldn't work, but because it was just a bad idea to segregate and make promises based upon race especially in a city that is so diverse. And lately it looks like Locke has dumped the brown part of the coalition.

Locke hasn't paid much attention to the Hispanic vote except in a negative way. His latest mailer to the west side of Houston, that Stace at Dos Centavos has mentioned, has a picture of the wife of a slain Houston Police Officer.

Clear Lake Forum. One didn't show. One shouldn't have.

The Clear Lake forum for District E and the Candidates for Mayor was held at UHCL competing with a beautiful night and disco dancing with the Chamber. The venue was absolutely great. Very professional. Very nice. Very well done. Questions were focused on the issues of Clear Lake, the golf course, the quality of life, traffic and other issues important to the area.

Mike Sullivan didn't show.
City Councilman Mike Sullivan declined to attend opting to dine and disco dance at the Clear Lake Chamber across the lake. It provided an opportunity for humor throughout the night. The District E part of the forum started at 7 and ended at 7:30.

Mike Sullivan vs Peter Brown Round 2

Once again Peter Brown has gotten under the skin of City Councilman Mike Sullivan. Last year Peter Brown visited Clear Lake and Sullivan didn't like it at all:
Houston City Councilman Mike Sullivan wasn't very happy with Councilman Peter Brown's visit to Clear Lake last month, prompting Mike to write a letter to the editor in The Citizen. And it wasn't very nice:Now, Sullivan is mad that Brown tried to get a resolution passed calling for unanimous support for NASA which is in Sullivan's district, although a completely different set of money, and politics, and just about everything. Houston Blogs has the full story, but this ain't over.

Till it's over.

Councilman Sullivan grandstanding in Clear Lake

From the get go I have not been very excited about Mike Sullivan as a Houston City Councilman. He is combative. He has a holier than thou attitude. (literally) He is not a team player on city council. His staff is slow to return calls or respond to letters (if they do) And he loves to grandstand on council and in public. All of this could change since he is being challenged by Wayne Garrison (pictured right). (Nothing like a challenger to get a much needed attitude adjustment.)

Recently Sullivan inspected the railroad crossings along Hwy 3 and was "furious".
Union Pacific poured new asphalt at the Bay Area, Pineloch, El Dorado and Clear Lake City Boulevard crossings about six weeks ago, but the crossings are still uneven, Sullivan said.

It only takes 11 to stop laughing.

State Senator Mike "Missing in Action" Jackson has sent the nomination of Don McLeroy for the Chair of the State Bored of Education, to the full Senate. McLeroy has made sure his far right reaching to the religious far right has become the punch line for Texas jokes across the country, yet Jackson has sent his nomination to the Senate floor. From the Dallas Morning News:

Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso, who voted against the nomination, said McLeroy "has demonstrated he is not fit to lead the board of education."

"He has used his position to impose his extreme views on the 4.7 million schoolchildren in Texas.

Like locking the Titanic's steerage passengers belowdecks while she sank ...

Following is the text of a fax I just sent to the office of my Congressman, Michael McCaul:
January 29, 2009

BY FAX: 202-225-5955

Congressman Mike McCaul
United States House of Representatives
131 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC

Dear Congressman McCaul,

As constituents and voters, we are expressing our dissatisfaction with your vote against the economic stimulus package. Making the unanimous Republican vote obviously partisan is the ludicrous proposal by the House Republicans of trying to stimulate the economy with nothing but tax cuts.

Speaking as a business owner and successful investor and as a family who has paid ample local, state and federal taxes, being over-taxed is not the problem.

It is truly an honor for me to be here with you today.
Lt. Governor Dewhurst, it is a pleasure to share this stage with you as we begin another session together.
Speaker Straus, congratulations on your new role and the affirmation of your peers it implies.  Like we have in the past, I look forward to working with you in the months to come.
Julie, you may have thought your life was busy before, but it’s about to go to a whole new level…just ask Nadine.
Speaking of which, I want to take a minute to recognize my good friend, Tom Craddick.
