To go where no man has gone before....and not come back

This is a absolutely ridiculous idea, one the Houston Chronicle shouldn't be advancing:
The concept of a one-way mission to Mars has circulated among space buffs for years, with a Houston-based former NASA engineer, James C. McLane III, among its chief champions. Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin has endorsed the plan.

Relieving NASA of the need to send fuel and rocketry to blast humans off the Martian surface, which has slightly more than twice the gravity of the moon, would actually reduce costs by about a factor of 10, by some estimates. There are enough problems facing NASA just getting to Mars such as radiation exposure, the one year trip to Mars and back, the ability to sustain life on the surface, the funding, as well as the fuel to leave the surface, but to suggest a one way trip is just irresponsible.

In this option, failure is an option.

Rookies in charge of NASA funding?

This just can't be good. According to the Houston Chronicle, The top aide to Rep. Pete Olson who tracks NASA-related issues is J.T. Jezierski who had this to say:
Jezierski noted that three of the four members of Congress representing Houston's Johnson Space Center, Florida's Kennedy Space Center and Alabama's Marshall Space Center are freshmen in Congress, potentially undercutting their clout.
Undercutting clout? You think? Here at JSC we had Congressman Nick Lampson who was inline to lead the committee that provides oversight to NASA. He was also on a short list to be NASA Administrator. He had worked hard to create bipartisan support for long term funding for NASA, something the agency has desperately needed.

Pete Olson on NASA. It's not good.

Congressman Pete Olson touched on the subject of NASA at his town hall meeting, with "touched" being the key word. (Full video below. It's only 8 minutes long) With NASA on a course chocked full of technical challenges, and lack of a mission statement with adequate funding, Olson used his 8 minutes to make general statements like "Think of the children", and "NASA is good", "I support NASA", "Send more money to pay the high wages of the contractors and NASA employees" etc etc.

If you came to hear how much a mission to the Moon or Mars would cost, or what technical challenges we are facing, or how NASA is going to fund a mission, or what that mission is that is adequately funded, or the recommendations that have been made by the Augustine Commission, you left disappointed.

Another NASA screwup by another Bush.

Back in 1989 the Bush administration announced a new direction for NASA called the Space Exploration Initiative with a mission to Mars as it's cornerstone project. Along with this SEI was a price tag of $489 Billion and it was dead before it hit the launching pad.

In 2005 Bush Jr. was much smarter. He called for building a new vehicle (Crew Exploration Vehicle), retire the 20 year old shuttle program, maintain the International Space Station, return to the Moon in 2020, and go to Mars. This time the cost would never be disclosed, instead money would be shuffled from Shuttle to the CEV, from Station to CEV, from science to CEV, etc etc.

NASA needs more money. And/Or DUH!

In the and/or duh category, the Augustine Commission has stated NASA needs more money to continue it's quest to build a new vehicle(s), maintain the International Space Station, return to the Moon, and go to Mars.
Current budget constraints confronting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration make it virtually impossible to sustain manned missions to the Moon, Mars or further into space in coming decades, a blue-ribbon study group is expected to tell the White House.
Once again, NASA has been sent on a wild goose chase that will cost hundreds of billions yet they haven't received adequate funding and for good reason: NASA hasn't stated how much they need.

Kudos to Culberson on NASA's funding

From all the speakers including our Senators and Congressman Olson, John Culberson was the only one to make any significant statements besides "space is our future" and "the best and the brightest work at NASA", "think of the children", etc etc at the Augustine Commission here in League City.

Culberson hit the nail on the head when he stated that President Bush in 2004 set NASA on a course for the Moon, Mars, and to explore the universe, but failed to secure adequate funding to do so. So here we are 5 years later with a program that is in disarray because we don't have enough money.

Come on out and ask questions of the Congressman about the health care provided to our elected officials and why this care cannot be extended to all citizens of the United States. Ask about pre-existing conditions which the Congressman has personal experience with. Inquire about how much more money NASA will need to complete Bush's vision to go to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The floor is open. Come on out!

Communion on the moon.

This is pretty interesting about Buzz Aldrin taking communion on the Moon:

The astronaut later described in Guideposts magazine what took place during the radio blackout as Armstrong watched but did not participate.

"I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the first food eaten there, were communion elements."

Aldrin proceeded to read from John 15:5.

"I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me."Take that you non-Catholics!

Don't fly me to the moon.

What he (Buzz Aldrin) says in Popular Mechanics:

As I approach my 80th birthday, I’m in no mood to keep my mouth shut any longer when I see NASA heading down the wrong path. And that’s exactly what I see today. The agency’s current Vision for Space Exploration will waste decades and hundreds of billions of dollars trying to reach the moon by 2020—a glorified rehash of what we did 40 years ago. Instead of a steppingstone to Mars, NASA’s current lunar plan is a detour. It will derail our Mars effort, siphoning off money and engineering talent for the next two decades.

Going where no man has gone before, sort of.

NASA successfully launched a probe to the Moon to map and search for a landing location when we return in 2020. From the Chronicle:
An unmanned rocket blasted off today from Cape Canaveral, carrying a pair of science probes that will scout out potential landing spots for astronauts. It’s a first step in NASA’s effort to return humans to the moon by 2020.
2020. That is only 11 years away. We haven't built the new vehicle, Orion, and we haven't begun to design the vehicle to take a lander to the Moon. And we will have to modify the Orion vehicle to support a Moon mission.
