Where did Peter go wrong?

After spending over $3 Million, Peter Brown came in 3rd place to Gene Locke and Annise Parker in the race for Houston Mayor. I am sure many, including Rick Casey of the Houston Chronicle, will analyze what happened and why it happened. So here is my two sense.

Peter actually ran a pretty good TV and mail campaign focusing on a clear message: He has a blueprint for Houston. And with $3 Million at his disposal, he was able to repeat this message over and over and over.....and over, which is the perfect blueprint for getting peoples attention. Unfortunately it did not turn into enough votes.

Brown running out of money

Could it be? Has Peter Brown's personal kitty gone dry? According to a press release titled "Lots of money pays off" by Brown's staff, Brown is asking for money to continue his personal and baseless attacks against his opponents:
On Tuesday, Peter told you about a new poll showing us in the lead. Lots of free money pays off! For weeks, we've been launching angry vicious personal attacks. Now they’re taking our misleading negative attacks to the next level by debunking them. Please contribute so we can continue our attacks and because I have been cut off from my wife's unlimited bank account.

"With my wife's unlimited funds, I have the unique opportunity to flood the air waves with repetitive statements like "blue print", "planning" and, my favorite ,"architect" - and it is working!"

In a recent poll Brown is now down by 6 points in a solid second place.

Who shouldn't be Mayor of Houston?

We are lucky to have 3 qualified individuals running for Mayor of Houston. This election will probably end in a runoff. With this in mind, who should and shouldn't be Mayor of the city?

Who should:
Annise Parker. Annise is by far the most complete candidate running for Mayor. Her experience as a City Councilmember and as City Controller puts her head and shoulders above the rest especially in these economic times. Houston would be in very good hands with Annise Parker.

Peter Brown. Peter has the experience as a City Council Member, and with his strong message of planning and his business experience.

No money. His money. Big money. Grassroots money.

The financial reports for Houston City races have been posted and the results are in for candidates for Mayor.

Roy Morales has no money. As of today at 5:00 PM he has not filed a report, although the city has 2 business days to post. Don't expect anything any different than last period. Last reporting period he raised about $18,000 and had about $9,000 cash on hand.

Peter Brown has his money. Peter raised only $121,000, spent over $1.6 Million, and loaned himself $1.7 Million. He has $1.9 Million cash on hand.

Gene Locke has big money. Locke raised over $949,000 (lots of attorney money), spent over $500,000 with $1.

Peter Brown on electricity rates in Houston

Kudos to Houston City Councilmember Peter Brown for addressing the issue of high electricity rates in Houston. From his website at peterbrownforhouston.com:
A BETTER DEAL FOR HOUSTON
As it is, we pay too much. Electricity in Austin and San Antonio is nearly half the price of ours. The City should use its leverage and drive a harder bargain, protecting Houston consumers and getting them a better deal. And we should explore creative ways to lower monthly electric bills, like an opt-in program that would allow residents – especially seniors and those on low or fixed incomes – to buy their electricity from the City and enjoy the discounted bulk rates the City already receives.

Museums for all, money for none.

I have been critical of the promises made by Gene Locke, candidate for Houston Mayor, to build a Hispanic Museum (and a soccer stadium) on the east side of Houston announced at the Hispanic Forum. From a former post:
Like many, I believe a Hispanic Museum would be great, although it wasn't a high priority of mine when I went to the forum. I have to agree with Dos Centavos, I am more concerned about lowering our crime rate, increasing high school graduation rates, maintaining services during this recession, encouraging the Hispanic Community to vote, and encouraging small business growth for the Hispanic community.

Observation on the Houston Latino Summit Mayoral Forum

The Event.
First, the organizers of the Houston Latino Summit should be commended. It was a very professional and well attended event. Thanks to City Councilman James Rodriguez, Marc Campos, and all the others who contributed to the success. The event had a good set of questions as well as participation by the audience. Good event. I hope to see more in the future.

Hispanic Museum.
I have not been in the loop on the proposed soccer stadium on the east side of Houston, but I really must be out of the loop on the proposed Hispanic Museum promised to the Hispanic audience by candidate Gene Locke.

Hispanic Latino Summit Mayoral Forum

Good crowd. All the candidates are here, as well as Roy Morales. City Councilman James Rodriguez has opened the event. Minerva Perez, former journalist for KTRK is the moderator.

Opening statements:

Roy Morales
Wow. Morales is not bilingual! That is a shock. Didn't expect the other candidates to be, but was surprised to hear Morales was not. Well, no wonder he doesn't like immigrants! Morales starts his opening statement. He was a decorated veteran.

Annise Parker
Native Houstonian. Passion is with quality of life issues. Created the rainy day fund which helped Ike recovery. Number one issue is the economy.

Peter Brown
Native Houstonian. Future of the city and Hispanic community go hand in hand.
