Leo Vasquez punked by Paul Bettencourt

Did Harris County Tax Assessor, Leo Vasquez, know what kind of poo Paul Bettencourt left him in when he quit just days after his re-election? Obviously not.

Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to accept a settlement of a lawsuit filed by the Texas Democratic Party against Paul Bettencourt's Voter Registration Office. Included in this settlement:

  • The voter registrar must now comply with all Texas Election Code deadlines. In sworn discovery, Bettencourt's staff admitted that more than 11,350 timely submitted applications were not processed and on the voter rolls when voting started as required by law.
  • The voter registrar's employees can no longer have employment or financial interests in outside companies that provide voter information to candidates or political parties, a practice Bettencourt allowed and Vasquez defended regarding moonlighting Republican political consultant Ed Johnson.

TDP picking on a disability to score political points

This came in today from the Texas Democratic Party about Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, the sponsor of the voter identification bill:

"I have trouble hearing women's voices." Texas Republican State Sen. Troy Fraser uttered that gaffe in response to Sen. Wendy Davis, who asked Fraser a question during Senate floor debate about SB 362, the photo Voter ID bill he filed. At the time, Sen. Fraser was likely unaware of the profound truth behind his blunder.

This from the Scott & White Healthcare Web site, with emphasis added:

The loss of hearing occurs slowly over time. It is most difficult to hear high-frequency sounds, such as someone talking.

Senator Fraser Says He Has Trouble Hearing Women's Voices And It Is True

Yesterday, during the marathon 24-hour debate on Senate Bill 362, State Sen. Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay), the bill's author, committed a little gaffe that, when examined closely, has the added virtue of being true.

From the Texas Democratic Party:

"I have trouble hearing women's voices."

Texas Republican State Sen. Troy Fraser uttered that gaffe in response to Sen. Wendy Davis, who asked Fraser a question during Senate floor debate about SB 362, the photo Voter ID bill he filed.  At the time, Sen. Fraser was likely unaware of the profound truth behind his blunder.

Indeed, Fraser was likely unaware that he uttered a statement that is very true about himself.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Puts Politics Ahead of People's Jobs

Video courtsey of Elise Hu at KVUE

First of all -- I think it's great that we've got interviews like this on YouTube, so job well done to Elise Hu, who has long been the leader in Texas news coverage on bridging the boundaries of older and newer venues of journalism.

That being said -- no one could ask the Senator why she skipped six votes on Friday? We wrote about it over the weekend, and the TDP sent out a press release about her absence earlier this morning:

"At a time when millions of people have lost their jobs, Kay Bailey Hutchison was the only Senator who didn't bother to show up to work last Friday night," observed Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie.

Every Election Cycle, It Happens

This time, it was this thread on a City Council race that did it. Not too surprising.

Every election cycle, new commenters and new writers come along that do little more than rip apart BOR, blast all of the writers for being paid political staff of the TDP, having no ethics, using no original content, and etc.

So here's what we'll do (we've done this before, I'm pretty sure): everyone who has a problem with the way we run our site, the way we write, who we cover, how we cover them, and what we are doing that is insulting to Democracy, Free Speech, Journalism, and Eyes, please leave a comment here.
