Round-em up!

With the start of the new football season, the Texas Progressive Alliance invites you to read this week's roundup of blog highlights in the voice of John Facenda.

Last week, Texas got some much needed help from the Feds when the EPA slapped down Governor Perry's global warming denier pick for our state's top environmental official. This week, the EPA will have another opportunity to intervene in Texas when Mayor Calvin Tillman releases an environmental study of air quality in DISH, TX that will contrast dramatically with industry findings. Keep watching Bluedaze: DRILLING REFORM FOR TEXAS as TXsharon brings you that news.

Hutchison Supporters Respond to Perry Consultant's "Whorehouse" Comments

When Democrats talk about broadening their appeal, we usually use the word "big tent."

Republicans, or at least Rick Perry consultant Dave Carney, prefer to use the word "whorehouse."

From a recent article written by Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News:

Perry political consultant Dave Carney said the Republican governor agrees the party should welcome new voters.

"But that doesn't mean you take your principles and throw them out the door and become a whorehouse and let anybody in who wants to come in, regardless," Carney said.

Whether he meant to or not (and, as you might expect, Team Perry issued a statement saying Carney's statement had nothing to do with the Governor's race), his words upset quite a few supporters of Kay Bailey Hutchison.

It’s time to let the sunset on the Builders Commission

Guest Editorial by John R. Cobarruvias, Houston, TX

In 2003 the Texas Legislature passed the Texas Residential Construction Commission Act, creating a Commission to regulate the home building industry and provide consumer protection for new
homebuyers. Six years later the Texas Comptrollers Office and the Texas Sunset Commission have called for the abolishment of the TRCC (trick). As the reports stated, the Commission is nothing more than a “builder protection agency” with “fundamental flaws that do more harm than good”. The fate of this ill-conceived Commission is currently in the hands of the Texas Senate. They should stand with the consumers of this state and let the sunset on this fatally flawed Commission.

Governor Rick Perry Ignores Texas Homeowners With Latest Tweet

Governor Rick Perry sent the following tweet message about ten mintues ago:

GovernorPerry #tcot #statebooks Texas cities among healthiest housing markets for 2009.

He provided a link to his website (which I'm not going to do), that then took you to this site. The criterion for selectiong what the best "housing markets" has nothing to do with homeowners, and everything to do with home builders. One of their central criterion has to do with how easily one can get a permit to build a home.

Which is why I replied to Governor Perry's tweet with this:

PhillipMartin @GovernorPerry When you create a whole state agency for Bob Perry, then you're gonna be attractive for builders

Governor Perry likes to look at economic indicators that are beneficial to his and his business friends.
