Mayor Bill White nails electricity deregulation

Mayor Bill White posted some interesting data on electricity deregulation on his facebook page:
In 1999 the average price of electricity fo U.S. homeowners was $8.16 per kilowatt/hr. and in Texas lower, $7.55, because our energy resources helped us. But then we deregulated power in Texas. By 2007 the ave. US price was $10.65, and in Tx it soared to $12.34. This year through Aug the ave. price to Texans is $12.82. Our neighbors? Okla (8.63) and La (8.51).Texas is ranked 37th in electricity rates. If we had remained a regulated industry we would be ranked 4th in the country paying just under 8 cents a kWh.  Oklahoma is currently ranked 4th. Lousiana is 9th. We really suck.

CLear Lake Honda and mandatory arbitration

Yesterday I bought a car for my daughter. She was happy with a Honda Civic with no frills, but we got a great deal on one with a few extras. She was happy, it is a safe dependable car and that's all that matters. But....

Sure enough one of the last papers we had to sign was the mandatory binding arbitration clause all new car dealers have in their contracts. Luckily the card dealers were able to get out of the arbitration clause imposed by the manufacturer due to a bill passed by the republican controlled Congress under Bush. Here is what Gene Fondren, President of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association said at a Congressional hearing opposing arbitration:
"By placing an arbitration clause in this 'take it or leave it' contract, the stronger party may impose mandatory binding arbitration on an unwitting or unwilling dealer.

Why is Palin resigning as Alaska Governor?

Ok. lets see. What could possibly make Sarah Palin the darling of the republican party to resign as the governor? Here is some ideas:

  1. A sex scandal is brewing and she doesn't want to tarnish the "family values" nametag of the republican party. (Sorry Sarah, but you are too late)
  2. Levy knocked up another one of her kids. (little bastard. Last time he will be invited to stand on the stage of the republican national convention!)
  3. She wants to donate time to planned parenthood. (might learn something)
  4. She wants to spend more time with her family. (uh-huh)
  5. She thinks she has a chance at winning the republican party beauty pageant or the nomination for President.

A Lead Balloon

Reading that the President of the United States, overwhelmingly elected last November because the nation wanted a change, is mulling over the concept of "preventative detention" of those suspected of being terrorists was the kind of shock no decent person should have to sustain the first thing in the morning.

From the NY Times:

President Obama told human rights advocates at the White House on Wednesday that he was mulling the need for a “preventive detention” system that would establish a legal basis for the United States to incarcerate terrorism suspects who are deemed a threat to national security but cannot be tried, two participants in the private session said.

Power Watch: Electricity rates for May 2009

Bucking last years rates, rates for May are lower than April. Kinetic is down to 10.5 cents/kWh for a 12 month plan. Reliant Energy who just sold their retail electricity business to NRG has the highest rates at 15.6. NRG claims this rate will be reduced in the near future. Uh-hu. Don't hold your breath.

StarTex has the lowest rate of 11.9 rate for a 24 month contract. US Energy Savings Corps has a 12.5 rate for a 60 month contract, which is a pretty good deal. You don't have to mess with electricity rates for 5 full years! StarTex has a 3 year at 12.

Juan Garcia: Confimation Process and More

As KT noted earlier, former State Representative and Commander in U.S. Navy Juan Garcia has been tapped by President Barack Obama to become the next Assistant Secretary of the Navy (ASN) for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Since Garcia will be the second Texan to be nominated for a Senate confirmable position (Ron Kirk was the first), there should some dissemination what this position involves, and how Garcia fits.

This is a position rich in history. Previous individuals who have served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy include Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and more recently the current U.S. Senator for Virginia, James

Breaking: The GOP leaves Arlen Specter's party

How many more will follow? Once again, the GOP has left the true conservatives forcing Arlen Specter to switch to the Democratic Party. And who can blame him?

For the last 8 years the GOP has claimed to be the protectors of the Constitution, fiscally responsible, strong on defense, strong on immigration reform, and the party with a big tent, and yet they lost another US Senator, Arlen Specter. Who can blame him for leaving?

His party has about as much sense of fiscal responsibility as Ken Lay. They protect the Constitution as long as it is the 2nd Amendment and nothing else. Illegal searches, torture, freedom of the press, rights to the courts, all are meaningless to them.

The State of the State of Texas 2009

It didn't get any better from 2007. Once again, Texas lines the bottom of the bird cage being #1 in highest insurance rates in the nation, some of the highest rates of electricity, number of Texans with no health insurance, most polluted state in the nation, and the list goes on.

You would think that after a decade of republican rule, we would move up in the world. According to a report, Texas on the Brink, compiled by State Senator Shapleigh (D-El Paso) Texas continues to fight Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas for the title of Worst State to Live in.
In Texas today, the American dream is distant.

US Senators seek ban on chinese drywall.

And rightfully so. This stuff is bad.
The bill by Sens. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Mary Landrieu, D-La., seeks to recall the drywall believed to be emitting "rotten egg" odors and causing unusual air conditioner problems in homes in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia.
Many years ago during the synthetic stucco problems, we (Homeowners Against Deficient Dwellings) asked the Texas Attorney General (John Cornyn at the time) to investigate and get the product off the market. Homes were literally coming apart under the stucco. Two by fours would crumble in your hands and there was a moisture problem causing mold. The AG didn't do anything and homeowners still today are buying synthetic stucco homes.
