Symington calls Douglas ads 'inaccurate''

Democrat Gaye Symington's gubernatorial campaign is calling a number of attack ads released by her Republican opponent "false" and "inaccurate."

Symington's (D-Jericho) campaign released a statement Wednesday saying Gov. Jim Douglas (R-Middlebury) has misconstued news reports and made attacks with no factual basis in his radio ads and public statements.

The Democratic House speaker called on the Douglas to stop running the ads and take a more positive approach to his campaign.

The statement accompanied an announcement that Symington is lauching a "fact check" section on her campaign website to refute Douglas' claims.

"There is no place in this campaign for false charges. The Governor needs to stick to the facts and commit to a positive discussion of the issues," Symington said in the statement. "The news articles the Douglas campaign is citing as proof of their claims do not, in fact, offer any proof."

The specific ads referenced on Symington's site relate to her record on property taxes and home heating costs, which she said Douglas has misrepresented.
