Democracy for America hits Douglas with attack ad

Just days after Democratic gubernatorial candidate and House Speaker Gaye Symington clinched Democracy for America's endorsement, the progressive "political action community" launched a scathing commercial ad aimed at incumbent Gov. Jim Douglas (R-Middlebury).

The thirty-second clip focuses on Douglas' Vermont Yankee policies and the growing concern about the safety of the state's nuclear reactor facility. The ad targets Douglas for vetoing a state bill that would create a decommissioning fund for Vermont Yankee, and alleges that the governor opposed independent inspection of the site.

Arshad Hasan, executive director for Democracy for America, claimed that Douglas had not done enough in regards to Vermont Yankee, and that "Vermonters want change this November."

The ad shows photos Douglas and Vermont Yankee, while citing newspaper articles about the governor's position.

Democracy for America is the nation's largest progressive "political action community" and was founded by Vermont's former governor and current Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.

Below is the full transcript of the ad:

Jim Douglas claims I know what Vermonters want and I know what they need.

Does he really?

Jim Douglas was against an independent safety inspection of Vermont Yankee.

He criticized members of a panel setup to review it.

He vetoed the de-commissioning fund.

Jim Douglas has sat idle as Vermont Yankee has had problem after problem.

Why isn't Jim Douglas keeping you and your family from becoming the victims of the next nuclear accident?

Democracy for America responsible for the content of this advertising.
