Incumbent Gov. Jim Douglas (R-Middlebury) attacked his fellow gubernatorial candidates House Speaker Gaye Symington (D-Jericho) and Independent Anthony Pollina on Friday for their tax policies.
Douglas spoke against raising property taxes while advocating capping property taxes, a view he claims his opponents do not share.
"In these difficult economic times, Vermonters want a governor who understands that property taxes need to be capped and who has a real plan to make fundamental changes that grow our economy, create jobs and help struggling families," Douglas said in a statement. "My opponents oppose commonsense limits on property tax growth, have no plans of their own and offer only hollow rhetoric to families and employers who are crying out for relief."
The Douglas camp has frequently criticized his opponents on taxes, and the issue has been consistent throughout his entire campaign.
Esquire magazine recently flouted Douglas' economic policy, and endorsed the governor. The article said of Douglas' economic policy: "[I]n truth, the state's woes can be blamed on the national economic downturn, and the numbers likely would have been worse without Douglas's successes on tax reform and business stimulus."
