Labor Department expects unemployment rate will increase

Vermont's unemployment rate in October was holding steady at 5.2 percent and unchanged since September, the state Department of Labor announced Friday.
 
The jobless rate is 1.3 percent higher than October of last year, and ties September's rate as the highest percentage of unemployment in fifteen years.

Douglas names deputy chief of staff

Putting the finishing touches on his new administration, Gov. Jim Douglas announced Thursday morning that his re-election Campaign Manager Dennise Casey would take over as deputy chief of staff.
 
Casey has been a member of  Douglas senior staff for several years, serving as the governor's special assistant and secretary of Civil and Military Affairs, and managing both his 2006 and 2008 re-election campaigns.
 
Casey fills the shoes of Betsy Bishop, who was appointed on Monday as commissioner of the Department of Economic Development.

State Treasurer Spaulding moves to lower home heating costs

The cost of weatherizing homes for the bitter winter months just got a little bit cheaper.

Vermonters could have an easier time affording weatherization and home heating equipment this winter, as state Treasurer Jeb Spaulding announced that interest rates for loans aimed at helping residents prepare their homes for winter have significantly decreased.

With states across the country facing tighter budgets, Gov. Jim Douglas’ administration on Monday proposed merging two departments to create a singular Department of Economic and Community Development.

The administration seeks to increase efficiency and cut funds by merging the state Department of Economic Development and the Department of Housing and Community.

Douglas appoints new Human Services secretary

Gov. Jim Douglas continues to fill positions in his administration and appointed a new secretary of Human Services on Thursday.

Douglas announced that Commissioner of Corrections Rob Hofmann will soon head the Human Services Agency, replacing Cindy LaWare as she explores other opportunities.

Complete election results

Vermonters met expectations of high voter turnout last Tuesday, flocking to the polls in numbers not seen since former President Bill Clinton was elected 16 years ago.
 
On Tuesday, the Elections and Campaign Finance division of Vermont's State Department published its report on this year's voter turnout as well as complete election results.
 
Over 66 percent of all eligible voters actually cast their votes, or about 326,822 people. An estimated 30 percent of the voters used absentee ballots.

Gov. Douglas shapes his new administration

Only a week after the general election, and Gov. Jim Douglas (R-Middlebury) is already shaping his administration.
 
The governor appointed Jonathan Wood as secretary of Natural Resources on Friday, and has chosen three finalists for Vermont's next education commissioner.
 
Douglas selected Wood, the former commissioner of Forest, Parks and Recreation (FPR), to replace George Crombie.

Vermont's independent voting streak prevails in 2008 election

In an election cycle dominated by change, Vermont incumbents at the state and national level kept a tight hold on their seats and Vermont voters kept up their independent voting streak.

Vermont's sole U.S. Representative, Peter Welch (D-Hartland), claimed nearly 85 percent of the vote, according to the early results. His closest competitor, independent Mike Bethel, earned less than 5 percent of the vote.

Welch wins landslide re-election

Exit polls by WCAX show Vermont's sole U.S. Congressman, Peter Welch (D-Hartland), has handily won his re-election bid.

Welch, a first time representative, received tremendous support among Green Mountain state residents and secured his seat with over 84 percent of the vote, with about 92 percent of precincts reporting.

As a result of the primaries, the congressional representative received the nomination of both the Democratic and Republican Parties, although he is a Democrat.
