Vermont: Bernie Sanders

D.C. doings

A little update on the day's events in Washington, when they weren't busy not deciding what to do about clunker cars:

- Today the Senate voted to boost money for food stamps and three in $350 million to the o lift milk price supports — the amount the government pays for surplus milk products — by an estimated $1.50 per hundredweight. That came from an amendment by Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and barely passed 60-37. Sixty votes were required because the amendment broke budget rules.
According to the AP: Sanders said dairy farmers, especially smaller ones, are struggling badly as milk prices have plummeted by more than 40 percent below last year, well below most farmers' production costs.

Democratic Party shift

This is not surprising, as in people don't last forever in these positions, but Ian Carleton leaves the Democratic Party helm at a time when it does not have an executive director either.

In an e-mail slugged "time to move on," he announces he's moving on, listing accomplishments of the party. Missing, as one might expect, is any mention of the 2008 gubernatorial race.

After three rich and exciting years of serving as Chair of the Vermont
Democratic Party, it is time for me to move on. As of this Saturday, I
wish to resign from my position as State Chair. Our able Vice Chair Judy
Bevans, with whom I have already discussed this decision, has graciously agreed
to serve as acting Chair until such time as the Party wishes to hold a special
election for Chair (see Article XX of the VDP Bylaws), or until this November
when the Party is statutorily required to undergo complete
reorganization.

Fools on the Hill

It was a tough day Wednesday on Capitol Hill for the captains of the financial industry, and for that you can thank our own sharp-tongued Senator Bernie Sanders, at least in part.

A group of the money men made appearances before the House Banking Committee that Sanders once served on and things didn't go well, even when the bankers tried to apologize for the mess they've made of things.

“You come here today on your bicycles after buying Girl Scout cookies and helping out Mother Teresa,” growled Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass. “You’re saying, ’We’re sorry. We didn’t mean it. We won’t do it again.

Leahy votes for bailout bill, Sanders against

Vermont's Senators split over the $700 bailout bill Wednesday, as Patrick Leahy (D-Middlesex) and Bernie Sanders (I-Burlington) cast opposite votes for the legislation, which ultimately passed by a resounding 49 votes.

Leahy, the Green Mountain State's senior senator, voted for the bailout bill, while Sanders, one of two Independents in the Senate, voted against it.

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Leahy emphasized the importance of judicial oversight in the final draft of the bill prior to its passage.

Vt.'s congressional delegation reacts to increased heating aid

As the weather turns colder and summer turns into fall, Vermont received Wednesday more than $2.4 million in additional federal aid for home heating relief for the coming winter months.

President Bush Wednesday ordered Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt to release the remaining reserve funds from the Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program-approximately $120 million-as requested by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Middlesex) and supported by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Burlington) and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Hartland).
