Vermont's independent voting streak prevails in 2008 election

In an election cycle dominated by change, Vermont incumbents at the state and national level kept a tight hold on their seats and Vermont voters kept up their independent voting streak.

Vermont's sole U.S. Representative, Peter Welch (D-Hartland), claimed nearly 85 percent of the vote, according to the early results. His closest competitor, independent Mike Bethel, earned less than 5 percent of the vote.

Pollina can keep his campaign contributions

Supporters of Independent Anthony Pollina can break out their checkbooks as U.S. District Court Judge William Sessions ruled Wednesday that the candidate could accept contributions of up to $2,000. 

Session's decision reverses the demands of Vermont's Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz and Attorney General William Sorrell that Pollina must return the donations form 35 contributors that topped $1,000. Five donors filed a petition against the state's original ruling.

Symington lays out plan for sex crimes reform

House Speaker and gubernatorial candidate Gaye Symington (D-Jericho) released her plan for reforming the way the state handles sex offenders and sex crimes investigations.

Symington called for fully-staffed Special Investigative Units — specialized law-enforcement squads dedicated to tracking sex crimes — along with a more extensive review process for releasing sex offenders from probation.

Vermont's Senate Judiciary Committee holds first hearing on state's sex offender policies

Vermont's Senate Judiciary Committee convened Thursday for the first of more than half a dozen hearings set to examine the state's dealings with Michael Jacques, who has been charged with kidnapping and murdering his niece, Brooke Bennett, in June.
