I-1000 opponents sue for donor confidentiality

Opponents of the I-1000 Death with Dignity campaign are asking a judge to overturn campaign finance laws that require them to disclose their contributors in Public Disclosure Committee reports. The group, Human Life of Washington, fears that supporters of its cause will be harassed by those in favor of assisted suicide.

Joe Turner at the Tacoma News-Tribune has a story on the effort in Tuesday's paper. He says the group finds state rules, which would classify them as a political action committee if they buy radio advertisements, overly broad.

"They want to attack our donors, and we want to protect them," James Bopp Jr., a national Right to Life lawyer in Indiana who is handling the case for Human Life of Washington, told the TNT. "And it's reasonable to believe that our supporters would be subject to harassment and intimidation, which is why the U.S. Supreme Court protects donors from disclosure."

On the other hand, supporters of the assisted suicide initiative believe that disclosure laws are crucial to maintaining accountability in the issue advocacy process.

"You can't stop people from lying," I-1000 campaign consultant Christian Sinderman said. "But you can let voters know who is lying. At least you can know the source of the claims being made and who is paying for it."

Human Life of Washington filed their lawsuit seeking to overturn the law in April.
