GOP starts wisecrack war with Gregoire viaduct stance

In a recent article in the Seattle Times, state GOP chair Luke Esser forecasted sarcasm and humor in this year's political attacks.

"I think humor has the potential to be far more devastating to your opponent than the meanest thing you can say about them," Esser told the paper.

Less than a week later he is living up to his promise. Esser sent out a press release Thursday deriding Governor Chris Gregoire for the op-ed piece she co-wrote on Thursday with King County Executive Ron Sims and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels where they claimed, "We're working hard to reach a solution that makes the most sense. We have until the end of this year. We cannot and will not spend the next five years debating and studying."

The GOP chair cracked wise at Gregoire's claim of action, in line with her opponent Dino Rossi's consistent claim that Gregoire won't take a stand on the viaduct. Rossi supports replacing the structure with a tunnel.

"Finally, some consistency from Gov. Christine Gregoire on the Alaskan Way Viaduct," Esser joked. "While she still has no clear position on how to replace the viaduct, there is one thing that has not changed over the last three and half years: Gregoire's promise to not put off the decision any longer."

Esser said it was "just another empty promise," and cited twelve instances dating back to the fall of 2005 where Gregoire made some variation on the statement that the state is ready to move forward with replacing the Alaskan Way viaduct.
