Baird predicts Democrats will rise in Southern WA

Brian Baird (D-Vancouver)|desc=Getty Images Photo|link=none|align=right|width=240|height=360]DENVER -Taking a moment to switch gears from the hoopla of the national convention to the nuts and bolts of state politics, Rep. Brian Baird (D-Vancouver) predicted that Southwest Washington would pick up a few seats for Democrats in the state House and Senate this November.

"I think we have a real shot at picking up a seat in the 17th," Baird said. "I think Tim Probst is going to win that seat. I think we have a great shot in the 18th. I like our candidate there VaNessa Duplessie, running against [Rep. Jaime] Herrera who has never been elected herself, really has hardly been in the district the last ten years. Vanessa is hard working, sharp, articulate, a real go getter."

Baird was also pleasantly surprised to see David Carrier running relatively close to Sen. Don Benton in the 17th District, and Jon Haugen within ten points of Sen. Joe Zarelli in LD 18.

"I think there is a probability of two, and a possibility of four," he said, referring to the House seats as probable and the Senate seats as possible.

Still, despite his optimistic view for 2008, Baird thinks the region will always be a swing region.

"Redistricting is going to have some really interesting changes there," he said with Clark County growing so much quickly, "but I think it will still maintain a swing [area]."

One aspect that might have an effect on local elections is Baird's opponent, Republican Michael Delavar. Delavar made it to the general election by defeating the party's hand-picked candidate, Christine Webb, by more than 4,000 votes. The Republican Party is unlikely to support Delavar in the general election.

"I don't think it will have a huge role, but he won't have any coattails. If they had a strong challenger to me that person could conceivably carry some coattails, raise money, rally troops, etc," Baird figured. "I don't think Michael Delavar is going to be able to do that."
