Dino Rossi's campaign for governor released its latest campaign ad today, going after Gov. Chris Gregoire on spending and the state budget.
The ad goes after Gregoire on the spending that increased in her first term, and accuses her of gambling on the state's continued financial well being.
Perhaps more notably, the ad, which is harder hitting than any of Rossi's previous spots by saying Gregoire has an "unbridled enthusiasm for spending" and that she "gambled" on the state's economy, attempts to turn the table on one of Gregoire's key campaign memes.
The ad claims that Gregoire "has done to Washington state what they have done to America," a clear reference to George W. Bush and the national economy.
Gregoire has said throughout the campaign that Rossi supported the same economic policies as Bush in order to link him to Wall Street and the general U.S. economy.
"Christine Gregoire made the deliberate decision to write a budget that was unsustainable," said Rossi spokesperson Jill Strait. "She ignored warnings from her own advisors who told her that her massive spending would lead to a deficit. The incumbent knew that she was increasing spending at more than twice the rate of revenue growth, but nevertheless she still decided to recklessly gamble with our future. She brought us a $3.2 billion deficit that now endangers the economic future of everyone in our state. This is the same kind of poor judgment and recklessness we have seen on Wall Street and in Washington D.C. The governor who exercised such poor judgment and got us into this mess is the wrong person to lead us out."
