Sonntag staying away from I-985

State Auditor Brian Sonntag is not endorsing Initiative 985, despite Tim Eyman's consistent statements that the initiative is based upon the performance audit that Sonntag oversaw on state transportation issues, the Tacoma New-Tribune's Joe Turner reported Thursday.

"I am not endorsing or opposing Initiative 985, or any initiative," Sonntag told Turner.

Sonntag also said that he did not consider I-985 and implementation of his audit, as Eyman has suggested the initiative would be.

Specifically, Sonntag said I-985's plan to allow all cars to drive in HOV lanes during non-peak hours had nothing to do with his audit, nor did all of the funding sources.

Still, he felt that his audit certainly did have a role in the initiative.

"That's what the reports should do, create and stir conversation and discussion over broad policy matters," Sonntag said.
