Burner camp feeling good about remaining mail-in vote

As Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) extends his slim lead on Darcy Burner (D-Carnation) in Washington’s 8th Congressional District race, Burner’s campaign remains positive.

“We feel pretty good about where things stand currently,” campaign spokesman Sandeep Kaushik told PolitickerWA.com this morning. “There are a lot of votes yet to be counted and we don’t expect we’re going to have any kind of determination in this race for a couple of days, at least.”

According to the latest vote tally, Reichert leads Burner 50.5 to 49.5, or about 1500 votes.

But Burner’s campaign said they expected the race to run in waves like this.

“Darcy Burner showed a lot of strength with the early absentee vote in King County, and we think there are a lot of those votes yet to be counted.”

They attribute those early absentee votes to an “enthusiasm gap” between Democrats and Republicans this time around, and suggest that Reichert did well with late entering votes from Pierce County, where support for Reichert traditionally runs high.

“We’ve said all along it would be close,” Kaushik concluded. “It is close. We’re optimistic that when the last vote is counted, we’re going to come out on top.”
