BLUMENTHAL: U.S. Rep. Smith won't join Obama administration

Here is an item from Les Blumenthal, our McClatchy Newspapers partners in the Washington, D.C., bureau:

WASHINGTON - Just got off the phone with Rep. Adam Smith who said he was going to run for re-election in 2010 and would not be taking a job in the Obama administration. Smith, who chaired the president's Washington state campaign, had long been rumored for a slot in the administration, perhaps as an assistant secretary of defense.

But while Smith said he had some discussions with the administration early on, he concluded he could best serve the new president by staying in Congress. He chairs the House Armed Service's subcommittee on terrorism and unconventional threats and just returned from a trip to Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Iraq.

Looks like U.S. Rep. Adam Smith vs. state Rep. Tom Campbell

Our Washington, D.C. correspondent Les Blumenthal caught up to U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, D-Tacoma, today to ask him about his plans for the future. (And see my earlier post about state Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Roy, running for the 9th Congressional District seat.

State Rep. Tom Campbell is running for 9th Congressional District, regardless of whether U.S. Rep. Adam Smith runs

But rumors persist that Congressman Adam Smith, D-Tacoma, is going to get some kind of job in President Barack Obama's Administration, so he won't be running for re-election.

I reported earlier in this blog that state Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Roy, was looking to announce his congressional bid if Smith did get a D.C. job. Now, I'm hearing from the Republican side of the street that Campbell is running for Congress, regardless.

(Yes, I've got a call into Campbell.)

Here's part of an e-mail I got from a source:

We have just heard a DC rumor (through the Republicans) that Adam is close to getting the appointment he wants, in the Defense Department or possibly State Dept.

Report: Adam Smith leads delegation to Syria

From Les Blumenthal in our D.C. bureau

U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, D-Tacoma, may find himself in the middle of the Middle East peace process.

CBS news is reporting the Washington Democrat is leading a delegation of House Armed Services Committee members to Syria. The report said the delegation was dispatched by the Obama administration and will meet with senior Syrian officials. The U.S. Embassy in Damascus confirmed the delegation was on its way.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is hoping for a thaw in Syrian-U.S. relations after years of all but being ignored by former President Bush. Syria could play a critical role in brokering a Middle East peace treaty as it has links to Palestinian, Iraqi and Lebanese interests.

Smith describes Pierce Co. as major battleground

TACOMA - Rep. Adam Smith (D-Tacoma) addressed the crowd at the Cheney Stadium Joe Biden rally with a challenge.

Smith, whose district includes portions of Pierce County, said that the state's second largest county is this election's key battleground and urged voters to work as hard over the next sixteen days as they would if they were losing by two votes.

"Pierce County is going to be critical," he said.

WA delegation splits against successful new bailout bill, 5-4

Washington state's U.S. House delegation once again split down the middle the Economic Stabilization Act, better known as the revised bailout bill.

The state's nine Representatives split their votes 5-4 just as they had done earlier in the week. This time, however, they voted mostly "no", despite the revised bill's passage in the House, 263-171.  All three Republicans voted against the bill, joined by two of the state's six Democats.

WA delegation split on failed bailout bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has voted against the Wall Street bailout bill this morning by a count of 228-205. The split was bipartisan, with 133 Republicans and 95 Democrats joining forces to block the $700 billion supplement to the financial industry.

The Washington delegation was likewise split, though slightly more partisan with five of the six Democrats voting in favor of the bill, save for Jay Inslee (D-Bainbridge Island) who joined all three Republicans for the "no" vote.
