Ballot initiatives get overwhelming answer from voters

SEATTLE -- Just as recent polling  has predicted, the state's main ballot initiatives were easily decided upon by Washington voters.

Two of the statewide ballot measures, I-1000 and I-1029, are leading by 18 and 48 percentage points, respectively, and I-985 is failing by 20 percent.

Sound Transit's Prop. 1, which faces voters in King, Pierce and Snohomish County, is ahead by 17 points so far.

Support for initiatives fading in latest Washington Poll

The final Washington Poll from Saturday, November 1 showed a mixed bag of support for the state's major initiatives, even as all four of those surveyed displayed a negative trend from the group's October 27 undertaking.

I-1000 and I-1029 continue to have significant support, but I-985 and Sound Transit's Proposition 1 have faltered in the last week.

UPDATED: Poll shows tight races for OSPI, lands commissioner

A recent poll from SurveyUSA shows close margins in the statewide races for superintendent of public instruction and commissioner of public lands, but clear leaders on two ballot initiatives and in the race for attorney general.

Incumbent Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma) leads Okanogan Democrat Peter Goldmark 45-43, and challenger Randy Dorn is ahead of incumbent Terry Bergeson 43-38 in the race for superintendent.

Washington Poll finds support for every major ballot initiative

The four major ballot initiatives up for a vote this November, I-1000, I-985, I-1029 and Prop. 1, all have positive support according to the latest Washington Poll. 

I-1000, which would legalize assisted suicide based upon the same legal constraints as a similar Oregon law, leads  its opponents 56-38.

Meanwhile I-985, which seeks to reduce traffic congestion by coordinating red lights and opening up HOV lanes, leads narrowly with a 45-43 count among voters statewide.

I-1029, requiring more training for certain health care workers, leads handily, 65-20.

Poll finds support for Prop 1, but voters wary of price tag

A new SurveyUSA poll sponsored by KING-TV shows support for Sound Transit's latest Proposition 1 measure that would expand mass transit, but the proposition's electoral outlook gets much closer when voters are aware of the proposition's $18 billion price tag.

When simply asked whether they supported the measure, respondents said yes 49 percent of the time compared with 30 percent who did not favor the measure.

Two new Yes on I-1000 ads

The Yes on I-1000 interest group, supporters of the physician-assisted suicide ballot initiative, are using their substantial cash advantage on advertising this week. They are now on the air with two new television ads and a radio spot.

Both ads highlight the safety of the measure, and look to reassure voters who might be wary of passing the ballot initiative.

Sonntag staying away from I-985

State Auditor Brian Sonntag is not endorsing Initiative 985, despite Tim Eyman's consistent statements that the initiative is based upon the performance audit that Sonntag oversaw on state transportation issues, the Tacoma New-Tribune's Joe Turner reported Thursday.

"I am not endorsing or opposing Initiative 985, or any initiative," Sonntag told Turner.

New Elway poll tracks statewide races, shows Gregoire up

A new poll done by local tracker Stuart Elway shows Gov. Chris Gregoire with a large lead over Republican Dino Rossi. The survey, which took place July 27-31 with a relatively small sample of 405 registered voters, had Gregoire up by a count of 52 percent to 36 percent with 12 percent undecided.
