Power of incumbency strong in 8 of 9 Washington Congressional Districts

Eight of Washington’s nine U.S. Representatives have already punched their ticket back to Washington, D.C. with electoral victories that were known within moments of the polls closing Tuesday night at 8PM, the one exception being Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) in the battleground 8th District.

Their path was easier than one might have thought. Despite Congress currently garnering a voter approval rating below 20 percent, the power of incumbency runs strong among Washington’s U.S. Representatives.

WA delegation splits against successful new bailout bill, 5-4

Washington state's U.S. House delegation once again split down the middle the Economic Stabilization Act, better known as the revised bailout bill.

The state's nine Representatives split their votes 5-4 just as they had done earlier in the week. This time, however, they voted mostly "no", despite the revised bill's passage in the House, 263-171.  All three Republicans voted against the bill, joined by two of the state's six Democats.

Ironically, the only instance in which challenger and incumbent agreed was in the deadlocked 8th District, where Darcy Burner (D-Carnation) and Rep. Dave Reichert both opposed the bill.

WA delegation split on failed bailout bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has voted against the Wall Street bailout bill this morning by a count of 228-205. The split was bipartisan, with 133 Republicans and 95 Democrats joining forces to block the $700 billion supplement to the financial industry.

The Washington delegation was likewise split, though slightly more partisan with five of the six Democrats voting in favor of the bill, save for Jay Inslee (D-Bainbridge Island) who joined all three Republicans for the "no" vote.

Baird tells Democrats to stand up for Obama and fight hard

DENVER - Brian Baird walked up to the stage at this morning's delegate breakfast with a computer in his hand, opened it up, and placed it on the podium. The 3rd District U.S. Representative from Vancouver then proceeded to read excerpts from an e-mail being passed around among opponents of Barack Obama. The e-mail included a number of false and offensive claims about his history and policy plans.

"We have a responsibility to counter this," Baird proclaimed. "This is an American success story and they are slandering it."

Can Burner follow Baird's lead from 1998?

DENVER - Bill Clinton made his way into Washington state politics today. No, he didn't stop by to greet the delegation, instead he came up in a story told by Rep. Brian Baird (D-Vancouver) about the 1996 race that saw him fall frustratingly short against then-Rep. Linda Smith.

WA-3 race tilts on Iraq

The voters of the 3rd Congressional District, where incumbent Rep. Brian Baird (D-Vancouver) has drawn three challengers heading into next week's "top two" primary, will have their chance to vote a mixture of political ideology and war on both sides of the aisle. The reason being, each of the two major parties has two candidates with varying viewpoints on Iraq. Adam Wilson in The Olympian has a story about it today.
