DelBene team already coming together

Suzan DelBene, the first declared Democratic candidate for Washington's eighth congressional district (WA-08), announced yesterday in an email to supporters that she is hiring several people to fill key positions in her campaign.

DelBene's campaign manager will be Kelly Evans, who successfully led Chris Gregoire's reelection effort last year and served as the campaign manager in the fights against both Initiative 912 (2005) and Initiative 933 (2006).

DelBene's media consultant will be Dan Kully, of Laguens Kully Klose. Like Evans, Kully was part of the teams that helped defeat Initiatives 912 and 933. He put together Darcy Burner's media last cycle, and was responsible for the widely praised ads that helped propel Jon Tester to victory in Montana in 2006.

Only a few months have lapsed since Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert won another election in the Democratic-leaning 8th Congressional District, turning back Darcy Burner for the second time. But already, Democrats are targeting the second-term Republican for defeat, citing his vote against the federal economic stimulus bill.

Reprising Darcy Burner (D-Netroots)

Josh Feit quotes at length from an Eli Sanders piece, which delves deep into the notion of whether or not Darcy Burner's netroots affiliation was a net boom or bust for her candidacy. Feit's whole post, heavy on Sanders content,...

Good Hire by Gregoire

No, I don't mean Zach Silk, the 2006 Darcy Burner campaign manager who - damnit - performed well as Gregoire's Deputy Campaign Manager in 2008. I mean former Slade Gorton staffer Bill McSherry, pulled away from the Puget Sound Regional...

Ex-candidate wants voters to set flat tax; universal health care

Jim Vaughn, a retired military officer who decided to run for Congress (in the 8th District) last year, is now prime sponsor of a pair of initiatives to the people.

The first, I-1044, seeks to replace the business and occupation tax with a flat rate corporate tax not to exceed 5% (national average is 6.6%).

The second, I-1045, provides every resident in the State of Washington with full medical coverage.

Vaughn got his feet wet in the political arena last year running against Darcy Burner in the Democratic primary. He lost. And Burner lost to incumbent U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert. But Vaughn met a lot of people.

Former Ross campaign boss Lowe explains how to beat Reichert

Marco Lowe, who managed KIRO radio host Dave Ross’ unsuccessful 2004 bid for Congress against Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn), readdresses the topic of 8th district politics in an article for The Stranger this week.

He mentions the importance of recruiting candidates early so that they may begin identifying voters as soon as possible, and urges candidates to make a better effort in Pierce County, where Reichert has won each of his three races by sizeable margins.

Rep. Reichert up less than 2,000 after first King County ballot drop

With the latest batch of ballot results in from King County, one of the state's major races remains too close to call.

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) still leads challenger Darcy Burner (D-Carnation) in the 8th Congressional District, but with thousands more ballots added to the fray he has not been able to increase his meager lead. With 63 percent reporting, Reichert leads by fewer than 2,000 votes out of more than 200,000 cast.

King County will do one more ballot drop tonight, as will Pierce County.

More counted ballots coming in later today could clear up state races

Most of the state's electoral races have already been decided, but some of the state's major races like the Reichert-Burner rematch in the 8th Congressional District are still up in the air. New rounds of vote results released later today could end much of the speculation.

King County will release more results at 3PM and 11:30 PM and Pierce County will release their day's count at 7PM.

Burner camp feeling good about remaining mail-in vote

As Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) extends his slim lead on Darcy Burner (D-Carnation) in Washington’s 8th Congressional District race, Burner’s campaign remains positive.

“We feel pretty good about where things stand currently,” campaign spokesman Sandeep Kaushik told PolitickerWA.com this morning. “There are a lot of votes yet to be counted and we don’t expect we’re going to have any kind of determination in this race for a couple of days, at least.”

According to the latest vote tally, Reichert leads Burner 50.5 to 49.5, or about 1500 votes.
