Going to Pittsburgh? Join us for the Pacific Northwest caucus at Netroots Nation

Netroots Nation, here we come!

In just over a week, the netroots community will be meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for its fourth annual gathering to talk about infrastructure building, strategy, and blending tried and true methods of community organizing with new online techniques. Daniel and I are very much looking forward to representing NPI in the City of Bridges next weekend, and we're also pleased to announce today that NPI will host a Pacific Northwest caucus inside the convention on Thursday at noon.

The caucus is open to Washingtonians, Oregonians, and Idahoans, as well as any conventiongoer who is interested in talking about local, state, and regional politics with us.

DelBene team already coming together

Suzan DelBene, the first declared Democratic candidate for Washington's eighth congressional district (WA-08), announced yesterday in an email to supporters that she is hiring several people to fill key positions in her campaign.

DelBene's campaign manager will be Kelly Evans, who successfully led Chris Gregoire's reelection effort last year and served as the campaign manager in the fights against both Initiative 912 (2005) and Initiative 933 (2006).

DelBene's media consultant will be Dan Kully, of Laguens Kully Klose. Like Evans, Kully was part of the teams that helped defeat Initiatives 912 and 933. He put together Darcy Burner's media last cycle, and was responsible for the widely praised ads that helped propel Jon Tester to victory in Montana in 2006.

Earmarks - pork or vital public investments? You be the judge

You can knock Sen. Maria Cantwell for supporting Sen. John McCain's call to strip all earmarks from the omnibus spending bill, then turning around and supporting the bill, complete with nearly 100 earmarks she supported. (See Les Blumenthal's story.) But when you look at the details of what such spending would support in our area, it's hard not to feel some ambivalence.

Others in Washington's delegation staked out their positions clearly. Sen. Patty Murray, who ranks no. 12 in the Senate in securing earmarks in this bill, made a floor speech defending such "congressionally directed spending." Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, true to his declaration of a unilateral earmark moratorium, did not sign on to any.

Footnote on Reichert's Moderation

A final thought on the discussion of Dave Reichert below on the main page: why do the netroots and some other arms of the left keep earnestly insisting that Dave Reichert is some sort of partisan-minded fool? Jim Miller pointed...

Dave Reichert: Moderate or Not?

Point: Goldy earnestly declares: Thanks in part to the complicity and/or laziness of our local media, Reichert has done a good job in recent years portraying himself as a "moderate" (whatever that means) while continuing to vote the Republican party...

Only a few months have lapsed since Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert won another election in the Democratic-leaning 8th Congressional District, turning back Darcy Burner for the second time. But already, Democrats are targeting the second-term Republican for defeat, citing his vote against the federal economic stimulus bill.

Reichert in the Spotlight

The Boston Globe sent a reporter out to the lovely confines of the Puget Sound region to do a story on Dave Reichert, as an example of House Republicans walking a careful line between opposing the recently passed "stimulus" plan...

U.S. House passes final version of stimulus plan without a single Republican vote

The United States House just voted 246-183 to pass the final version of H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Not surprisingly, the legislation was again opposed by the entire House Republican caucus.

So, Dave Reichert, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Doc Hastings, Greg Walden, Mike Simpson, Dong Young, Denny Rehberg ... we'd love to hear your answer to this question: Why do you hate America?

To be fair, there are seven Democrats who also apparently don't care if our nation's economy falls off a cliff and smashes into smithereens. Among those seven are Idaho's Walt Minnick, who deserves the same scorn as the Republicans.

Ex-candidate wants voters to set flat tax; universal health care

Jim Vaughn, a retired military officer who decided to run for Congress (in the 8th District) last year, is now prime sponsor of a pair of initiatives to the people.

The first, I-1044, seeks to replace the business and occupation tax with a flat rate corporate tax not to exceed 5% (national average is 6.6%).

The second, I-1045, provides every resident in the State of Washington with full medical coverage.

Vaughn got his feet wet in the political arena last year running against Darcy Burner in the Democratic primary. He lost. And Burner lost to incumbent U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert. But Vaughn met a lot of people.

Et tu, Reichert?

Well, that didn't take long.

Last week, when our own Andrew Villeneuve was in D.C. for the inaugural festivities, he happened to encounter Rep. Dave Reichert at an event in the Dirksen Senate office building. When a skeptical Washingtonian questioned where Reichert's sentiments now were, he responded thus:

Reichert himself then spoke, assuring the assembled group that he was in fact "on board" with President Obama's new direction for America.

[...]

Reichert acknowledged that he expects his feet to be held to the fire. He didn't promise to be a reliable vote for legislation President Obama supports, but it's evident that his intention is to keep an open mind.
