Goldmark voids another last-minute deal by Sutherland

Just before he left office, former state Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland (former Tacoma mayor) signed a settlement and lease agreement with Taylor Shellfish for the harvest of geoducks on state lands.

New Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark says he isn't going to sign it. It's basically a do-over.

Taylor Shellfish is getting fined for harvesting geoducks from state lands without and lease and the company is now getting the lease they should have gotten in the first place, said Goldmark spokesman Aaron Toso.

"The lease and the settlement are separate issues," Toso said "But they were tied together (in Sutherland's deal) and the public didn't have a voice in the lease.

Nelson wants to restrict campaign money for lands commission

Rep. Sharon Nelson, D-Maury Island, has introduced a couple bills that stem largely from what former Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland did late last year.

He gave a 30-year state lease to a mining company for a project on Maury Island -- after he lost the election, but before he left office. That really ticked off the locals.

This is after the fact, but.....read on.

Rep. Nelson introduces two new laws to protect the environment

January 27, 2009

OLYMPIA -- The controversy swirling around a local gravel mine has led Rep. Sharon Nelson (D-Maury Island) to write two proposed laws, both aimed at protecting the environment from damage.

House Bill 1708 would establish new protections for the aquifer on Maury Island and require that any large mine cease operations if there is damage to the island’s aquifer, which is the sole source of drinking water for residents of the island.

Sutherland acknowledges loss to Goldmark

Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma), the outgoing public lands commissioner, has finally acknowledged that he has lost his race for a third consecutive term to Democrat Peter Goldmark.

Although Sutherland had an early lead on election night, Goldmark eventually came back to take a slim lead as more and more votes from King County, where Goldmark won with over 60 percent of the vote, were counted.

A number of news sources called the race for Goldmark last week, but Sutherland refused to concede, citing the fact that there were still thousands of votes remaining to be counted.

Sutherland not giving up lands commissioner race yet

Despite several news sources having called the lands commissioner race for Peter Goldmark (D-Okanogan), incumbent Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma) is not ready to concede.

Sutherland is currently trailing Goldmark by just under 20,000 votes with fewer than a half million votes remaining. It is a sizeable advantage for Goldmark, but given the rightward trend of late-breaking votes, Sutherland told The Olympian's Brad Shannon this morning that he refuses to concede just yet.

Goldmark, Dorn overturn incumbents

The Seattle Times has just called the races for lands commissioner and superintendent of public instruction, giving victories to challengers Peter Goldmark (D-Okanogan) and Eatonville's Randy Dorn.

Both races had been incredibly close since election night, but a new batch of ballots from King County pushed them over the top.

Goldmark leads incumbent Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma) by 2 percent with 68 percent reporting, and Dron leads incumbent Terry Bergeson by 4 points with 62 percent reporting.

Rep. Reichert up less than 2,000 after first King County ballot drop

With the latest batch of ballot results in from King County, one of the state's major races remains too close to call.

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) still leads challenger Darcy Burner (D-Carnation) in the 8th Congressional District, but with thousands more ballots added to the fray he has not been able to increase his meager lead. With 63 percent reporting, Reichert leads by fewer than 2,000 votes out of more than 200,000 cast.

King County will do one more ballot drop tonight, as will Pierce County.

Elway Poll statewide snapshots

The latest Elway Poll, in addition to the gubernatorial race, also took the pulse of each of the other state wide elections.

In the race for attorney general, incumbent Republican Rob McKenna extended his lead over Democrat John Ladenburg by six points from September. He now leads 48 to 29. Remarkably only 55 percent of Democrats were supporting Ladenburg.

The battle for public lands commissioner remains close, with incumbent Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma) regaining the lead from Peter Goldmark (D-Omak) 37-33, with 30 percent still undecided.
