Six Democratic senators go on record opposing Homeowner's Bill of Rights

Earlier today, as NPI reported, the Washington State Senate passed SB 5895, the 2009 version of the Homeowner's Bill of Rights. While the victory is significant - and everyone who helped lobby for the legislation should be proud of their efforts - the margin of victory for this year's bill was as narrow as it could have been.

Twenty five senators voted in favor of the bill. Twenty four senators voted against. The Senate is comprised of only forty nine senators. Pretty simple math.

Joining the entire Republican caucus (always happy to oblige the BIAW) in opposing this critical consumer protection bill were six Democrats: Senators Sheldon, Haugen, Kilmer, Jarrett, Ranker, and Shin.

Provocation of the Day

Does anyone doubt for a second that if George W. Bush had publicly fumbled aspects of his first Presidential meeting with our nation's preeminent ally that the tut-tutting from the press would be absolutely deafening? When it reaches the point...

Friends in (Formerly) High Places

You may have heard recently that former President George W. Bush’s former White House Counsel sent a letter to Karl Rove (via Rove’s attorney) telling Rove not to testify before or produce documents to a congressional subcommittee investigating possible malfeasance by the Bush Administration. The letter claimed Executive Privilege, stated that Rove had total immunity, and therefore could not testify before Congress.

To say that the former President was stretching the concepts of privilege and immunity beyond the breaking point is a colossal understatement. One can only hope that Congress brings contempt proceedings against Rove rather than buckle to the former President.

Michelle Obama could bring in big bucks for Gregoire

Summer fundraisers with high-profile national figures are commonplace, especially for incumbents with a challenger hot on their heels, like U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert with Newt Gingrich on Father's Day this or President Bush last year.

But when Michelle Obama, wife of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, comes to town this Thursday to raise money for Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, things will be different.

For starters, she isn't running for, nor has she ever held any office. But more importantly, this fundraiser has seating for 1600.
