Review: The Man Who Owns the News

Rupert Murdoch is the narcissistic and evil bogeyman of the right wing media machine. He is a symbol of big, bad, Republican corporate conservatism.

Or is he?

Throughout The Man Who Owns the News, Michael Wolff explores the modus operandi of Rupert Murdoch and shows that Murdoch's true desire is not to further the goals of conservatism, but to own newspapers, especially prestigious and well read newspapers. For Murdoch, newspapers are a source of pride and power.

Wolff begins the book with a prologue introducing the reader to Murdoch. Wolff's account of Murdoch's development of his media empire is interwoven with the more recent story of Murdoch's clever and dogged pursuit of the Dow Jones Company and the Wall Street Journal, its flagship publication.

I need a new crystal ball

What a difference a year makes. Heck, what a difference a week makes.

It's hard to describe my feelings upon President Obama's first full week in office. But then, I imagine I don't really have to. Like me, everyone reading this is probably feeling that same, unfamiliar mix of relief and elation at the flurry of positive, beneficial, forward-looking actions and decisions coming from the Oval Office on a near daily basis.

Ordering the closure of Guantanamo.

Formally banning torture.

Putting stringent restrictions on who can claim executive privilege in keeping presidential records secret, and when they can do it.

Reversing the "Mexico City Policy"

Letting the EPA, whose staff scientists all support the idea, move forward on

Clinton delegates emerge from their journey

DENVER - For some Hillary Clinton supporters, changing allegiance to Barack Obama after the presidential primary was not like flipping a light switch. Far from it.

"I don't know if it is so simple," Seattle's David Kunselman said of the idea of switching his support. "There was a lot of emotion, a lot of time, a lot of commitment.

"The intellectual aspect of it is easy," he continued, "but it was a process to actually get there."

Murray lauds delegation for participating

DENVER -- The first speaker at this morning's delegation breakfast was the state's senior U.S. Senator, Patty Murray. Notably, much of her words were spent applauding the delegates for the hard work and sacrifice they were making for the good of the party, if not the country.

"I know that all of you, just like me, want to do more than just yell at your television set," Murray said. "That is what this election is about you are participating. Thank you very much."
