John Ladenburg has competition for EPA Region X job

According to the Post Intelligencer, former Washington Utilities and Transportation chairman Mark Sidran, a former Seattle prosecutor, has joined the field.

And so has state Sen. Phil Rockefeller, D-Bainbridge Island.

Since leaving his job as Pierce County executive, John Ladenburg has hung his shingle out at his sons' law firm in Tacoma. He's "of counsel." He told me last week he's also doing some consulting work for Cascadia developer Patrick Kuo.

The P.I. points out that U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair, will have a big say in who President Obama nominates for the Environmental Protection Agency job in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, etc. Dicks over sees the EPA budget.

My money's still on Ladenburg. He and Dicks go way back.

Here is the post by Joel Connelly at the P.I.

Pierce County Council takes up McCarthy's reorganization plan

The budding relationship between new Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy and the County Council will get its first test this afternoon. That’s when the council will take up McCarthy’s request to transfer funding from other departments to her office to support the administrative reorganization she favors.

Early indications are the council won’t give her what she wants, at least today.

McCarthy has requested the council transfer about $261,000 from the county communication and human resources departments to the executive’s office. That would help boost staffing in McCarthy’s office and support a new administrative structure there.

Previous Executive John Ladenburg had a single chief of staff (Lyle Quasim) who oversaw county departments.

Pierce County may cut funding for community groups

One sign that these are tough budget times: Pierce County may cut hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to community groups and charities.

The details are yet to come. But County Executive Pat McCarthy has recommended cutting $565,000 in funding to outside groups as part of an $8 million spending reduction.

County Council members and the executive divvy up millions of dollars in such spending each year. This year’s budget includes $4.8 million for “miscellaneous current expenses,” which includes funding for the community groups. It’s a way for elected officials to fund what they say are worthy programs.

Council members clearly are uncomfortable with the idea of reneging on funding for those groups.

Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg (D-Tacoma), who was the Democratic nominee for attorney general in 2008, is very interested in becoming the Environmental Protection Agency administrator for Region 10, a source close to Ladenburg tells PolitickerWA.com.

Region 10 covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Pacific Northwest Indian Country. Oregon's Elin D. Miller currently holds the post after being appointed in late 2006.

The Tacoma News-Tribune's David Wickert gathered reactions from a number of Pierce County political leaders on the subject of outgoing Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg's legacy.

Speculation begins for local appointees in Obama administration

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi never let a stump speech go by without reminding the audience that, as governor, he would be able to appoint hundreds of new state officials from the “blueberry commission on up.”

That didn’t happen, but on the federal level Democratic President-elect Barack Obama, taking over after eight years of Republican George Bush, will have the authority to appoint thousands of officials to government jobs, including a number of high profile posts here in Washington state.

A recent poll from SurveyUSA shows close margins in the statewide races for superintendent of public instruction and commissioner of public lands, but clear leaders on two ballot initiatives and in the race for attorney general.

Elway Poll statewide snapshots

The latest Elway Poll, in addition to the gubernatorial race, also took the pulse of each of the other state wide elections.

In the race for attorney general, incumbent Republican Rob McKenna extended his lead over Democrat John Ladenburg by six points from September. He now leads 48 to 29. Remarkably only 55 percent of Democrats were supporting Ladenburg.

The battle for public lands commissioner remains close, with incumbent Doug Sutherland (R-Tacoma) regaining the lead from Peter Goldmark (D-Omak) 37-33, with 30 percent still undecided.
