Brad Pitt sighting in D.C.

Latest celebrity sighting from D.C. correspondent Les Blumenthal:

WASHINGTON - It wasn't just another day at the office for Sen. Patty Murray.

Brad Pitt dropped by.

Pitt was in town talking about a sustainable housing project he's working on in New Orleans. Murray chairs the Senate appropriations housing subcommittee. According to aides, the meeting lasted about 20 minutes. They also said he smiled and shook a few hands as he passed by staffers on the way to Murray's office. The hallway outside was lined with interns.

Pitt also met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Harry Reid to talk about the "Make It Right" project that involves affordable and environmentally sustainable housing for low income people living in New Orleans' lower 9th Ward.

No word on the other half Brangelina, though Angelina Jolie is in D.C. filming a movie.

House okays higher unemployment benefits

On Friday, the State House passed a bill to give workers higher unemployment benefits. Soon, the Senate is expected to follow suit:
Those temporary increases would take effect in May, the earliest the state Employment Security Department can implement, said Rep. Steve Conway, D-Tacoma, chairman of the House Commerce and Labor Committee and prime sponsor of House Bill 1906. They would remain in place until Jan. 3, 2010, then drop back down to the regular range.
Although the higher benefits are just temporary, it is good to see the state government stepping up to help its people in these harsh economic times, trying to salvage our deteriorating economic security.

BLUMENTHAL: Stimulus claim is down to 79,000 jobs in Washington state

The federal stimulus bill in Congress could create a lot of jobs in Washington state, but the number might be shrinking. Or not. Here's an assessment from Les Blumenthal in McClatchy NewspapersÂ’ Washington, D.C., bureau.

WASHINGTON — So the White House says its version of the stimulus bill, or as Democrats now call it the recovery bill, will create or save 79,000 jobs in Washington state. In a state-by-state breakdown, the administration said 90 percent of those jobs will be in the private sector.

Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House version of the bill would create or save nearly 100,000 jobs and shave 2 percentage points off the state's current 7.
