Rep. Brendan Williams rises to defense of Labor Council

State Rep. Brendan Williams, D-Olympia, is looking at the state law which the state Public Disclosure Commission will be looking at after the State Patrol forcibly handed off the whole "e-mail" case to the elections watchdog agency.

If you'll recall, the State Patrol announced yesterday it couldn't find a state law that was violated by the e-mail the was CC'ed to four legislators, an e-mail in which the Labor Council laid out its strategy for lobbying the Worker Privacy Bill.

I'm posting Williams' e-mail because he cites the same civil statute that PDC executive director Vicki Rippie mentioned yesterday when I asked her if the PDC had requested the material from the WSP.

Susan Fagan (no relation to Eyman's buddies) running in special election to replace Steve Hailey

I don't usually cover Eastern Washington legislative races, but when I saw the name "Fagan" I thought it might be someone related to Jack Fagan or Mike Fagan, the father-son team who are the Eastern Washington partners of professional initiative promoter Tim Eyman of Mukilteo.

Susan Fagan, from Pullman, said she is NOT related to those other Fagans.

She is, however, one of the Republican precinct committee officers who selected former state Rep. Don Cox to replace the late Rep. Steve Hailey in the Legislature after Hailey's death. Now, she is running in the special election to select a permanent replacement. Primary will be in August; runoff in November this fall.

Gov. Gregoire may run for third term

The governor may be back for more punishment, according to AP reporter Curt Woodward.

Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire is considering a rare third run at the governor’s mansion.

Gregoire has registered as a candidate for governor in 2012 with the state Public Disclosure Commission. Gregoire’s spokesman tells The Associated Press that she hasn’t decided whether to run — but she’s keeping her options open.

It’s the first time Gregoire has publicly said she’s interested in a third term. The last Washington governor to run for three terms was Republican Dan Evans, who served from 1965-1977.

Gregoire was elected to her second term last fall over Republican Dino Rossi. State law doesn’t allow her to raise any money for a possible 2012 campaign until the 2009 legislative session is over.

Election watchdog clears Dammeier of any wrongdoing

Maybe that headline overstates what the state Public Disclosure Commission actually did earlier this month.

The PDC said the woman who lodged a complaint against then-candidate, now-state Rep. Bruce Dammeier, R-Puyallup, a month before the November 2008 election did not back up her claim. So the PDC dismissed the complaint.

Lindsey Grad claimed Dammeier was getting a below-market rate on the cost of his campaign literature from Print NW, a company in which Dammeier has a 14 percent ownership interest. Grad claimed that printing amounted to an in-kind campaign contribution in excess of the $800 contribution limit, and that Dammeier didn't report it.

The PDC contacted a Tumwater printing company and found that Print NW actually charged between 5 and 15 percent more than what Dammeier's own print shop charged him for some work, and 15 percent less for door hangers.

Rep. Roach must refund campaign cash

State Rep. Dan Roach has been ordered to repay his campaign $21,504 from his 2006 race because Roach improperly transferred the money to his own bank account to make up for lost wages, the Seattle Times is reporting.

But the money Roach paid himself was for profit disbursements from Roach Gymnastics, a gym he owns with his wife, and not eligible for the wage-only reimbursement rules set forth by the Public Disclosure Commission. However both the PDC and Roach characterized the instance as a misunderstanding of the rules.
