Meet with your state legislators at a town hall this Saturday

Has the bad economy got you down? What about slow progress on improving our schools or regulating climate pollution? Or does the prospect of massive cuts to social services and universities have you up in arms?

Take your concerns to your local community meeting place this weekend and share them with your legislators. Find your legislative district town hall meeting here (PDF). Whether they like to or not, the people who represent us see lobbyists all the time, but the people they would really like to see more of are folks like you and me. We care about the future of Washington, and we have opinions.

Cops could impound cars of hookers, pimps and johns, and it would cost $500 fee to get them back

House Bill 1362 would let cities and counties impose harsher penalities on prostitutes, pimps and johns if prostitution occurs in particular areas designated by the councils or commissioners.

If the vehicle were used somehow in the act of prostitution or promoting prostitution or some other related offense, law officers could impound the vehicle. Besides having to pay all the towing and impound fees, the hooker, pimp or customer also would have to an extra $500 "administrative fee" to the city or county.

Imagine coming home and trying to explain why you no longer have the family.

"Honey, I lost the car!" or "Honey, our car was stolen and I gotta go down to the towing yard and reclaim it.

House Bill 1823--Turnabout is Fair Play

House Bill 1823 is sponsored by Representatives Larry Springer and Roger Goodman, among others. I mention Larry and Roger specifically, as they happen to be my Representatives from the 45th Legislative District and I want them to get the credit they deserve. The Bill is a good piece of legislation because it keeps Counties and Cities responsible for their own respective criminal justice costs.

(Disclaimer: I work for the City of Seattle in my professional life. I drafted the language in HB 1823 at the request of the Association of Washington Cities, or AWC, in my professional capacity. I am writing this post in my private capacity, and as a resident of an Eastside city.
