Outside spending trickles down to key legislative races

Almost $22 million was spent by independent parties on behalf of candidates in this year’s election, about ten percent of which was done at the legislative district level.

Leading the charge were three of the Republicans top challengers. Outside interests spent $172,548 on Kevin Parker’s (R-Spokane) behalf in the 6th District and $147,143 on Jan Angel (R-Port Orchard) in the 26th. Both won their races to become the first Republicans in years to take back a Democratic seat.

Former legislators call for further investigation of White

A bi-partisan group of former legislators and candidates wrote a letter to the King County Prosecuting Attorney Friday calling for a further investigation into the King County ethics breach by Scott White (D-Seattle).

White was recently found in violation of the King County ethics code for doing campaign work on county computers while he was an employee at the Department of Transportation. White claims that it was a mistake stemming from a synched telephone, but an independent technology expert hired by the county debunked White's claims.

Hanford court ruling involves prime races

When the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that Initiative 297, which blocks continued nuclear waste from being disposed at Hanford Nuclear Reservation, was unconstitutional, it affected more than just advocates of the Hanford situation. Because of the parties involved, the decision may have an impact on some of the state's political races, as well.

Former Rep. Nixon to seek seat in 45th

According to Mulick, former Rep. Toby Nixon will seek the seat he vacated in 2007 in the 45th district. Nixon, a Kirkland Republican who stepped down to try a failed Senate run, will challenge incumbent Roger Goodman (D-Kirkland).

Nixon's decision comes along with a harshly worded press release.
