'GOP Party' lawsuit takes military tack

State Republicans are going after the Democrats' recent lawsuit that aims to change the ballot to show gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi labeled as a Republican instead of preferring the "G.O.P. Party" by saying it discriminates against overseas military personnel whose ballots have already been mailed. The Democrats responded by saying their lawsuit will not affect those in the military.

UPDATE: Dems sue to change Rossi's ballot affiliation, Republicans cry distraction

The Washington State Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit in the King County Superior Court seeking to declare that Dino Rossi's preference of the "G.O.P. Party" is illegal in Washington state.

The suit seeks to require Secreatary of State Sam Reed to "distribute an amended certified list of gubernatorial candidatesthat, in accordance with the law, accurately identifies Rossi's party preference as the Washington State Republican Party."

Elway: Gregoire leads, and GOP Rossi outperforms Republican Rossi

The September edition of the Elway Poll shows Gov. Chris Gregoire leading her opponent Dino Rossi, but by how much depends on the description. When identified as "Republican Dino Rossi", Gregoire led by ten points, 51-41, but when respondents were told that their choice was "Dino Rossi, who prefers the GOP Party", he cut the lead to four, 48-44. With the numbers combined Gregoire leads by eight, 50-42.

New poll won't sway GOP on top two

MINNEAPOLIS - Elway Research conducted a poll for the secretary of state's office the weekend after the "top two" primary to gauge voter approval of the new system and found largely positive results. The Olympian reports that the Elway poll found 76 percent of respondents approved of the new system with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent.

McKenna happily soaked

Attorney General Rob McKenna was recently thrown into Lake Sammamish, though for better reasons than one might presume. As Chris Mulick reports, McKenna was hosting a primary night barbecue this past August 19 when his campaign met a fundraising goal that resulted in McKenna doing his best Michael Phelps impression.

King Co. GOP Chair Sotelo likes Reichert's chances

MINNEAPOLIS - Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) has consistently shown up on lists of vulnerable Republican House incumbents in 2008, just two years removed from a close race in 2006 in a district that voted for John Kerry. Among those is the Pindell Report, which showed Reichert's rematch with Democrat Darcy Burner as the country's most competitive.

Vote update

Votes are still coming in via the U.S. Mail causing leads to shrink and expand all over the state.

In the governor's race, Dino Rossi has cut Chris Gregoire's lead by a point after two more days of returns, from a four point deficit to what is now 48.8 percent for Gregoire and 45.7 percent for the Republican. He has also erased Gregoire's lead in the two Eastern Washington counties she once held, Spokane and Asotin.

Ammons gives post-primary rundown

David Ammons, the long time Associated Press reporter turned communications director for Secretary of State Sam Reed, has sent out a press release highlighting what the office sees as the major stories in the first ever top two primary.

The release, seen here, focuses on the races around the state that either led to a slate of all Republicans or all Democrats in the general election, or those that allowed a minor party candidate into the top two.

The Lilac City paper has color coded the county-by-county results that are in so far for the governor's race where, as of Wednesday night, Chris Gregoire led Dino Rossi by four percentage points, 49.2 to 45.2.
